Overview

EN 61338-4-1:2005 is a European standard published by the CLC that provides a blank detail specification template for waveguide type dielectric resonators. As a supplementary document to the sectional specification EN 61338-4, it outlines the minimum required content for detail specifications related to these resonators. This standard ensures uniformity and facilitates clear communication between manufacturers and customers by standardizing the documentation process for waveguide dielectric resonators.

This standard was developed under the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) framework, specifically IEC TC 49, focusing on piezoelectric and dielectric devices used for frequency control and selection. It complements other IEC publications, including EN 61338-1 (generic specification) and EN 61338-4 (sectional specification), establishing a coherent system for specifying electronic components with assessed quality.

Key Topics

  • Minimum Content Requirements
EN 61338-4-1 details the essential elements that must be included in a waveguide dielectric resonator detail specification. This ensures that all crucial data such as ratings, characteristics, ordering information, marking, and inspection requirements are comprehensively covered.

  • Specification Layout and Identification
The standard recommends a consistent front page layout for detail specifications including identification numbers, issuing organizations, relevant IEC numbers, and brief component descriptions. This includes guidelines for both standard catalog items and custom-built resonators.

  • Ratings and Characteristics
Key specifications such as temperature range, climatic category, mechanical test severities, nominal frequency, frequency tolerance, and insertion attenuation must be clearly stated. This supports proper component selection and quality assurance.

  • Inspection and Testing Requirements
A thorough inspection regime is advised, including both 100% non-destructive tests like visual examination and insertion loss measurements, and group B sampling tests such as dimensional checks. This promotes product reliability by defining consistent quality control methods.

  • Ordering and Marking Guidelines
Standardized ordering information is required to minimize ambiguity and streamline procurement processes. Marking of resonators and their primary packaging must comply with IEC 61338-1, ensuring traceability and correct identification.

  • Supplementary Information
The standard allows inclusion of additional non-inspection information such as circuit diagrams or explanatory notes to enhance understanding of the detail specification.

Applications

EN 61338-4-1 is primarily applied by manufacturers, quality auditors, and customers involved in the design, production, and deployment of waveguide type dielectric resonators used in microwave components. Common industries benefiting from the specification include:

  • Telecommunications – ensuring stable frequency control in filters and oscillators.
  • Radar Systems – supporting precise frequency selection and minimizing signal loss.
  • Aerospace and Defense – providing rugged, reliable dielectric resonators compatible with demanding environmental conditions.
  • Electronic Component Manufacturing – standardizing product documentation for catalog and custom components.

Using this standard helps maintain consistent quality, interoperability, and regulatory compliance for components critical to high-frequency electronic systems.

Related Standards

  • EN 61338-1:2005 – Waveguide type dielectric resonators: Generic specification outlining general requirements.
  • EN 61338-4:2005 – Sectional specification that defines sectional requirements complemented by the blank detail specification in EN 61338-4-1.
  • ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 – Provides guidance on the drafting and structure of international standards, which EN 61338-4-1 follows.

By aligning with these related standards, EN 61338-4-1 integrates into a comprehensive framework for the specification, testing, and qualification of waveguide dielectric resonators, supporting global harmonization and industrial best practices.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this I
