Overview
EN IEC 61643-11:2025/A11:2025 is an amendment to the European standard governing surge protective devices (SPDs) for low-voltage AC power systems. This standard, published by CENELEC (CLC), specifies requirements and test methods for SPDs designed to protect electrical equipment from overvoltages caused by lightning or switching operations. The amendment clarifies regulatory alignment and harmonization requirements, strengthening the link to essential safety objectives under the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2014/35/EU.
Organizations and manufacturers involved in designing, installing, or certifying low-voltage SPDs will find this standard crucial for ensuring the quality, reliability, and safety of electrical infrastructure.
Key Topics
EN IEC 61643-11:2025/A11:2025 covers several key aspects related to the selection and testing of surge protective devices:
- Requirements for SPDs: Outlines essential characteristics and performance criteria for devices protecting AC low-voltage power systems.
- Test Methods: Specifies test procedures to verify that SPDs perform correctly under expected surge and fault conditions.
- Amendments to Test Procedures: Updates and streamlines test conditions, including modifications to requirements for temporary overvoltages (TOVs) and test voltage tables.
- Harmonization with EU Legislation: Aligns the standard’s requirements with the safety objectives of Directive 2014/35/EU, providing a presumption of conformity for manufacturers.
- Normative References: Updates key references to other international and European standards relevant to low-voltage electrical installations and equipment.
Applications
The scope and content of EN IEC 61643-11:2025/A11:2025 make it highly relevant to multiple stakeholders in the electrical and building technology sectors:
- Manufacturers of SPDs: Ensures devices meet minimum safety and performance benchmarks required for European markets.
- Electrical System Designers: Assists in specifying compliant surge protection solutions for AC low-voltage power networks in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings.
- Testing Laboratories: Provides updated guidelines for verifying SPD conformity through comprehensive testing processes.
- Installers and Inspectors: Offers clear criteria for selecting and assessing surge protection components to reduce system downtime and increase equipment lifespan.
- Compliance and Certification Bodies: Supports documentation and assessment processes needed to demonstrate compliance with EU directives, particularly the LVD.
Proper installation and selection of surge protective devices in line with this standard can:
- Enhance operational reliability of electrical systems.
- Prevent costly equipment damage due to transient overvoltages.
- Support legal and insurance requirements for electrical installations.
Related Standards
EN IEC 61643-11:2025/A11:2025 references and works in conjunction with several foundational standards in the field of electrical power system protection, including:
- IEC 60364-4-44: Low-voltage electrical installations - Protection for safety against voltage disturbances and electromagnetic disturbances.
- IEC 60947-1: Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear - General rules.
- IEC 61643-01: Low-voltage surge protective devices - General requirements and test methods.
- HD 60364 Series: European harmonized standards for low-voltage electrical installations.
These related standards provide the broader framework for electrical safety, equipment protection, and quality assurance across Europe’s electrical infrastructure.
Adherence to EN IEC 61643-11:2025/A11:2025 ensures that surge protective devices are fit for purpose, built to recognized safety standards, and compliant with crucial EU directives, protecting both investments and end users in the electrical industry.
