Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-11: Particular requirements for tumble dryers
IEC 60335-2-11:2024 deals with the safety of electric tumble dryers intended for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances including direct current (DC) supplied appliances and battery-operated appliances. This standard applies to the drying function of washing machines having a drying cycle. This standard also deals with the safety of heat pump type tumble dryers. These appliances may use flammable refrigerants. Additional requirements for these appliances are given in normative Annex AA. Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless can be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms are within the scope of this standard. Examples of such appliances are tumble dryers for communal use in blocks of flats or in launderettes. As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons.
However, in general, it does not take into account
- persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction;
- children playing with the appliance.
Attention is drawn to the fact that
- for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements can be necessary;
- in many countries, additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities.
This standard does not apply to
- appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes;
- appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas);
- appliances incorporating steam generating devices in which steam is produced at a pressure exceeding 50 kPa.
This ninth edition cancels and replaces the eighth edition published in 2019. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
a) alignment with IEC 60335-1:2020;
b) conversion of some notes to normative text (Clause 1, Annex AA);
c) implement new definitions to type of appliances (3.5.102, 3.5.103, 3.5.104);
d) specific requirements have been added in 22.51 for remote operation;
e) specific requirements have been added in Clause 24 for motor running capacitors;
f) new modifications in Annex R;
g) update of requirements for appliance that use flammable refrigerants in Clause 21 and Clause 22 of Annex AA;
This part 2 is to be used in conjunction with the latest edition of IEC 60335-1 and its amendments unless that edition precludes it; in that case, the latest edition that does not preclude it is used. It was established on the basis of the sixth edition (2020) of that standard.

L'IEC 60335-2-11:2024 traite de la sécurité des sèche-linge à tambour électriques destinés à un usage domestique et analogue, dont la tension assignée est inférieure ou égale à 250 V pour les appareils monophasés et à 480 V pour les autres appareils, y compris les appareils alimentés en courant continu et les appareils alimentés par batteries. La présente norme s'applique à la fonction de séchage des machines à laver le linge qui possèdent un cycle de séchage. La présente norme traite également de la sécurité des sèche-linge à tambour à pompe à chaleur. Ces appareils peuvent utiliser des fluides frigorigènes inflammables. Des exigences supplémentaires pour ces appareils sont données à l'Annexe AA normative. Les appareils non destinés à un usage domestique normal, mais qui peuvent néanmoins constituer une source de danger pour le public, tels que les appareils destinés à être utilisés par des usagers non avertis dans des magasins, chez des artisans et dans des fermes, sont compris dans le domaine d'application de la présente norme. Les sèche-linge à tambour mis à la disposition commune des utilisateurs dans des immeubles d'habitation ou dans les laveries automatiques sont des exemples de tels appareils. Dans la mesure du possible, la présente norme traite des dangers ordinaires présentés par les appareils, encourus par toutes les personnes.
Cependant, elle ne tient pas compte en général :
- des personnes (y compris des enfants) dont les capacités physiques, sensorielles ou mentales; ou le manque d'expérience et de connaissance les empêchent d'utiliser l'appareil en toute sécurité sans surveillance ou instruction;
- de l'utilisation de l'appareil comme jouet par des enfants.
L'attention est attirée sur le fait que
- pour les appareils destinés à être utilisés dans des véhicules ou à bord de navires ou d'avions, des exigences supplémentaires peuvent être nécessaires;
- dans de nombreux pays, des exigences supplémentaires sont spécifiées par les organismes nationaux de la santé, par les organismes nationaux responsables de la protection des travailleurs et par les organismes nationaux responsables de l'alimentation en eau.
La présente norme ne s'applique pas
- aux appareils prévus exclusivement pour des usages industriels;
- aux appareils destinés à être utilisés dans des locaux présentant des conditions particulières, telles que la présence d'une atmosphère corrosive ou explosive (poussière, vapeur ou gaz);
- aux appareils équipés de dispositifs générant de la vapeur dans lesquels la vapeur est produite à une pression dépassant 50 kPa.
Cette neuvième édition annule et remplace la huitième édition parue en 2019. Cette édition constitue une révision technique.
Cette édition inclut les modifications techniques majeures suivantes par rapport à l'édition précédente:
a) le texte a été aligné sur l'IEC 60335-1:2020;
b) certaines notes ont été converties en texte normatif (Article 1, Annexe AA);
c) de nouvelles définitions relatives au type d'appareil sont mises en œuvre (3.5.102, 3.5.103, 3.5.104);
d) des exigences spécifiques ont été ajoutées au 22.51 pour la commande à distance;
e) des exigences spécifiques ont été ajoutées à l'Article 24 pour les condensateurs permanents de moteurs;
f) de nouvelles modifications ont été apportées à l'Annexe R;
g) les exigences relatives aux appareils qui utilisent des fluides frigorigènes inflammables ont été mises à jour à l'Article 21 et à l'Article 22 de l'Annexe AA;
h) de nouvelles exigences relatives au matériel électrique "n" non producteur d'étincelles sont mises en œuvre à l'Annexe BB.
La présente partie 2 doit être utilisée conjointement avec la dernière édition de l'IEC 60335-1 et ses amendements sauf si cette édition l'exclut. Dans ce cas, la dernière édition qui n'exclut pas la présente partie 2 est utilisée. Elle a été établie sur la base de la sixième édition (2020) de cette norme.

INTRODUCTION
Edition 6 of IEC 60335-1:2020 defines and introduces requirements for a detachable
power supply part of an appliance. In the document, 24.2 prohibits the use of a power
supply in a flexible cord.
QUESTION:
Does Subclause 24.2 prohibit the use of a detachable power supply part?
ANSWER
No, a "detachable power supply part" is a defined term and is not captured by the term
"power supply" as used in Subclause 24.2.
NOTE A detachable power supply part is captured by the defined term when the output of the power supply
part is detachable from the class III construction part of the appliance at:
– the power supply part, or
– the class III construction part of the appliance.
However, the supply cord (if any) does not have to be detachable from the detachable power supply part.

Part 2-11: Particular requirements for tumble dryers
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
