General Information
Relations
Overview
IEC 60335-2-48:2000 is the IEC safety standard that specifies particular requirements for commercial electric grillers and toasters (rotary, continuous and radiant‑heat types such as rotisseries and salamanders). It is Part 2-48 of the IEC 60335 series and is to be used in conjunction with the latest edition of IEC 60335-1 (general safety for household and similar electrical appliances). The standard applies to appliances not intended for household use (e.g., restaurants, canteens, bakeries, butcheries) and covers electrical parts of appliances that may otherwise use other energy sources.
Key scope points:
- Rated voltage: ≤ 250 V for single‑phase (phase to neutral) and ≤ 480 V for other appliances.
- Includes rotary/continuous grillers and toasters and appliances using radiant heat.
- Excludes appliances designed exclusively for industrial process, griddles (covered by IEC 60335-2-38), continuous mass‑production equipment, or use in corrosive/explosive atmospheres without additional measures.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard supplements and modifies IEC 60335-1 with particular requirements specific to commercial grillers and toasters. Major technical topics include:
- Classification and protection: appliances are normally Class I for protection against electric shock (earthing provisions required).
- Marking and instructions: mandatory instructions for installation (banks of appliances, fixed wiring), water‑pressure marking for water‑connected units, and warnings about cleaning (e.g., prohibition of water jets where applicable).
- Testing conditions: appliances tested as heating appliances; normal operation, moisture resistance, leakage current and dielectric strength tests, endurance and abnormal‑operation tests.
- Construction and safety aspects: stability/mechanical hazards, mechanical strength, internal wiring, components, terminals, creepage/clearance, resistance to heat/fire/tracking, and radiation/toxicity considerations.
- Installation considerations: requirements for appliances fixed to installation walls or installed in banks, and instructions where leakage currents may exceed 10 mA (recommendation for earth leakage protective devices).
