General Information
Overview
IEC 60839-7-5 defines message formats and protocols for serial data interfaces in alarm transmission systems using a two‑wire configuration in accordance with ISO/IEC 8482. It specifies the physical, data link, transport and application‑layer requirements for interfaces between Control and Indicating Equipment (CIE) and alarm system transceivers, enabling interoperable connections over twisted‑pair multipoint wiring.
Keywords: IEC 60839-7-5, alarm systems, two‑wire configuration, ISO/IEC 8482, serial data interfaces, alarm transmission systems, CIE, transceiver.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose
- Defines a flexible, standard interface permitting a single master CIE to communicate with multiple transceivers or slave CIEs using ISO/IEC 8482 signalling.
- Layered protocol alignment
- Application layer: supports the common application protocol from IEC 60839‑7‑2.
- Transport layer: uses transport conventions and block formats in IEC 60839‑7‑4; CIE acts as ORIGINATOR, transceiver as RECEIVER.
- Data link layer: adopts IEC 60839‑7‑3 data link protocol with Master/Slave configuration rules and reconfiguration behaviour.
- Master/Slave rules
- All transceivers can be SLAVE (or optionally MASTER); CIEs can be MASTER or SLAVE.
- Single CIE on link must be MASTER; multi‑CIE arrangements specify which device is MASTER and how takeover and initialization occur.
- Error handling and monitoring
- Failed transmissions must generate failure messages to the sender and optionally to a network monitoring centre.
- Connection integrity must be monitored; both failure and restoration must be reported and message‑logged.
- Physical layer
- Uses ISO/IEC 8482 signal levels over two‑wire twisted pair.
- Octet format: lowest‑value bit first, leading START bit, trailing STOP bit; optional parity bit.
- Link shall support 4 800 Bd (with allowance for alternative rates).
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of alarm control panels, alarm transceivers and communications modules to ensure interoperability.
- System integrators and installers designing multipoint twisted‑pair alarm links between CIEs and transceivers.
- Security installers and service organisations implementing reliable alarm reporting and fault monitoring.
- Testing and certification labs verifying conformity to IEC and ISO/IEC signalling and protocol layers.
- Alarm receiving centres and network operators requiring defined message formats and failure reporting.
Related standards

- IEC 60839‑7‑2 (Application layer)
- IEC 60839‑7‑3 (Data link layer)
- IEC 60839‑7‑4 (Transport layer)

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
