Overview

IEC 60335-2-98:2002 is the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) product standard that specifies safety requirements for household and similar electrical humidifiers. It is a Part 2 (“particular requirements”) standard that supplements and modifies the general safety rules in IEC 60335-1. The standard covers humidifiers with rated voltages up to 250 V for single‑phase and 480 V for other appliances, including devices that atomize water, evaporate water by heating, or blow air through a moist element.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability: Applies to household and similar humidifiers (including some appliances used by laymen in shops, light industry and farms). Excludes HVAC duct humidifiers (IEC 60335-2-88), medical devices (IEC 60601), industrial-only equipment and appliances for special atmospheres.
  • Use with Part 1: This standard is used in conjunction with IEC 60335-1; where Part 2 does not mention a subclause, Part 1 applies.
  • Electrical limits: Rated voltage limits and special provisions for electrode‑type appliances.
  • Electrode‑type appliances: Special definitions and test conditions - e.g., water resistivity for tests is about 500 Ω·cm at 20 °C; rated power input marking and guidance on solution composition and prohibition of d.c. supply.
  • Marking and instructions:
    • Manual-fill units must show a visible fill-level mark.
    • If emitted water vapour exceeds 60 °C, appliances must carry a “CAUTION: Hot water vapour” marking.
    • Instructions must include filling, cleaning and descaling procedures; electrode-type devices must include composition/quantity guidance for the solution.
    • For mains-connected water supplies, instructions must state the maximum permissible water pressure (in pascals).
  • Test and safety topics covered: protection against access to live parts, moisture resistance, leakage current and dielectric strength, heating, endurance, abnormal operation, mechanical strength, stability, internal wiring, components, clearances and creepage, resistance to heat/fire and rusting.
  • Test condition note: Humidistats are rendered inoperative or short-circuited during certain tests.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers and product designers: to design safe humidifiers that meet international safety expectations and market access requirements.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies: to perform the required safety tests and conformity assessment.
  • Compliance and safety engineers: to prepare technical files, instructions and markings.
  • Regulators and procurement teams: to reference uniform safety criteria for market surveillance and purchasing.

INTRODUCTION
It has been assumed in the drafting of this International Standard that the execution of its

provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.

This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such

as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in

normal use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal

situations that can be expected in practice.

This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 as far as possible so that

there is compatibility with the wiring rules when the appliance is connected to the supply
mains. However, national wiring rules may differ.
If an appliance within the scope of this standard also incorporates functions that are covered
by another part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant part 2 is applied to each function separately, as
far as is reasonable. If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into
account.
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes
precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject.
An appliance that complies with the text of this standard will not necessarily be considered to
comply with the safety principles of the standard if, when examined and tested, it is found to
have other features that impair the level of safety covered by these requirements.
An appliance employing materials or having forms of construction differing from those detailed
in the requirements of this standard may be examined and tested according to the intent of
the requirements and, if found to be substantially equivalent, may be considered to comply
with the standard.

Part 2-98: Particular requirements for humidifiers

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of
patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
This part of International Standard IEC 60335 has been prepared by IEC technical committee
61: Safety of household and similar electrical appliances.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1998. It constitutes a
technical revision.
This bilingual version (2005-10) replaces the English version.
The text of this part of IEC 60335 is based on the following documents:
FDIS Report on voting
61/2231/FDIS 61/2306/RVD
Full information on the voting for the approval of this standard can be found in the report on
voting indicated in the above table.

Partie 1;
– notes: à l’exception de celles qui sont dans un nouveau paragraphe ou de celles qui concernent des notes de
la Partie 1, les notes sont numérotées à partir de 101, y compris celles des articles ou paragraphes qui sont
remplacés;
– les annexes complémentaires sont désignées AA, BB, etc.
NOTE 3 Les caractères d'imprimerie suivants sont utilisés:
– exigences: caractères romains;
– modalités d'essais: caractères italiques;

• reconduite;
• supprimée;
• remplacée par une édition révisée, ou
• amendée.
60335-2-98  IEC:2005 – 7 –
The French version of this standard has not been voted upon.
This part 2 is to be used in conjunction with the latest edition of IEC 60335-1 and its
amendments. It was established on the basis of the fourth edition (2001) of that standard.
NOTE 1 When “Part 1” is mentioned in this standard, it refers to IEC 60335-1.
This part 2 supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses in IEC 60335-1, so as to
convert that publication into the IEC standard: Safety requirements for electric humidifiers.

as far as is reasonable. When this standard states “addition”, “modification” or “replacement”,
the relevant text in Part 1 is to be adapted accordingly.
NOTE 2 The following numbering system is used:
– subclauses, tables and figures that are numbered starting from 101 are additional to those in Part 1;
– unless notes are in a new subclause or involve notes in Part 1, they are numbered starting from 101, including
those in a replaced clause or subclause;
– additional annexes are lettered AA, BB, etc.
NOTE 3 The following print types are used:
– requirements: in roman type;
– test specifications: in italic type;
– notes: in small roman type.
Words in bold in the text are defined in Clause 3. When a definition concerns an adjective, the adjective and the
associated noun are also in bold.
The following differences exist in the countries indicated below.
– Clause 1: Electrode-type appliances and appliances with bare-heating elements are only allowed if they are
for permanent connection to fixed wiring (Netherlands).
– 7.12.1: The minimum rated pressure is 1,0 MPa (Denmark, Sweden and Norway).
– 24.101: The requirement is not applicable (USA).

The committee has decided that the contents of this publication will remain unchanged until
the maintenance result date indicated on the IEC web site under "http://webstore.iec.ch" in
the data related to the specific publication. At this date, the publication will be
• reconfirmed;
• withdrawn;
• replaced by a revised edition, or
• amended.

+A2:2008
INTRODUCTION
It has been assumed in the drafting of this International Standard that the execution of its

provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.

This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such

as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in

normal use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal

situations that can be expected in practice and takes into account the way in which

electromagnetic phenomena can affect the safe operation of appliances.

If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into
account.
2 When a part 2 standard does not include additional requirements to cover hazards dealt with
in Part 1, Part 1 applies.
NOTE 1 This means that the technical committees responsible for the part 2 standards have determined that it is
not necessary to specify particular requirements for the appliance in question over and above the general
requirements.
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes
precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject.
NOTE 2 Horizontal and generic standards covering a hazard are not applicable since they have been taken into
consideration when developing the general and particular requirements for the IEC 60335 series of standards. For
example, in the case of temperature requirements for surfaces on many appliances, generic standards, such as
ISO 13732-1 for hot surfaces, are not applicable in addition to Part 1 or part 2 standards.

HOUSEHOLD AND SIMILAR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES –

SAFETY –
Part 2-98: Particular requirements for humidifiers

1 Scope
This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following.
This International Standard deals with the safety of electric humidifiers for household and
similar use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and
480 V for other appliances.
NOTE 101 Examples of appliances that are within the scope of the standard are
– appliances that atomize water;
– appliances that evaporate water by heating;
– appliances that blow air through a moist element.
Appliances that are not intended for normal household use, but that nevertheless may be a
source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in
light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by
appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general,
it does not take into account
– persons (including children) whose
• physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or
• lack of experience and knowledge
prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction;
– children playing with the appliance.
NOTE 102 Attention is drawn to the fact that
– for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be
necessary;
– in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national

authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities.
NOTE 103 This standard does not apply to
– appliances for heating liquids (IEC 60335-2-15);
– humidifiers intended for use with heating, ventilation or air-conditioning systems (IEC 60335-2-88);
– appliances for medical purposes (IEC 60601);
– appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes;
– appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a
corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas).
