General Information
Overview
IEC 60317-80:2019 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the requirements for a specific type of winding wire used in electrical equipment. This standard focuses on polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular copper wire, class 120, with a bonding layer. It covers the materials, dimensions, electrical properties, and performance criteria for insulated copper winding wires designed for applications requiring a thermal class rating of 120.
The standard defines a dual coating system:
- An underlying enamel based on polyvinyl acetal resin, which may be chemically modified without losing its original resin identity or performance requirements.
- A secondary bonding layer made from either a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin to enhance adhesion and durability.
IEC 60317-80:2019 supports a wide range of nominal conductor sizes, with widths from 2.00 mm to 16.00 mm and thicknesses from 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm, accommodating various electrical and mechanical design needs.
Key Topics
Material Specification:
The primary insulation is based on polyvinyl acetal resin, known for chemical stability and thermal endurance. Modifications to this resin are allowed to improve performance, provided the resin’s chemical characteristics remain consistent.Thermal Class 120:
This thermal classification ensures the wire insulation system can withstand operating temperatures up to 120 °C, with heat shock testing confirming resistance to 155 °C. This characteristic is critical for ensuring reliability in electrical windings exposed to elevated temperatures.Dual Coating System:
The inclusion of a bonding layer improves wire handling, layering, and mechanical strength in winding applications, enabling secure adhesion of the enamel layers.Dimension and Grade Compliance:
The standard specifies conductor parameters including width, thickness, and width/thickness ratios as detailed in IEC 60317-0-2:2019. Both grade 1 and grade 2 classifications are included, ensuring comprehensive coverage of performance tiers.Testing Methods and Performance Criteria:
The document outlines rigorous tests for electrical resistance, elongation, springiness, flexibility, adherence, heat shock, abrasion resistance, solvent resistance, breakdown voltage, insulation continuity, temperature index, resistance to refrigerants and transformer oils, solderability, dielectric properties, pinhole detection, and packaging standards.
Applications
IEC 60317-80:2019 certified wires are primarily used as insulated winding wires in electrical machines and components such as:
- Electric motors and generators
- Transformers
- Electromagnetic coils and inductors
- High-performance electrical devices requiring robust thermal and mechanical wire insulation
The polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular wire with a bonding layer enhances manufacturability and operational durability, offering improved insulation integrity and mechanical bonding during coil winding. The class 120 rating ensures performance in applications with elevated operating temperatures, helping extend equipment life and reliability.
Related Standards
For full application and compliance, IEC 60317-80:2019 is intended to be used in conjunction with related standards including:
- IEC 60317-0-2:2019: General requirements and specifications for enamelled rectangular copper wires, detailing conductor dimensions and ratios.
- IEC 60851-4:2016: Test methods for chemical properties of winding wires, which inform quality assurance and material validation.
- Other parts of the IEC 60317 series, which specify particular winding wire types and packaging requirements.
- IEC 60264 series for packaging standards of winding wires, ensuring proper handling and preservation.
Practical Value
Using IEC 60317-80:2019 ensures engineers and manufacturers have access to well-defined, internationally recognized specifications for polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular copper wire that guarantee:
- Consistency in wire dimensions and materials for optimized winding performance
- Reliable thermal and mechanical properties suitable for demanding electrical environments
- Clear testing protocols to verify insulation integrity and electrical safety
- Compatibility with modern coil winding processes due to bonding layer technology
Adherence to this standard facilitates international trade, product certification, and interoperability of electrical apparatus components, ensuring system robustness in supplied electrical windings.

1 Scope
This part of IEC 60317 specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular copper winding wire
of class 120 with a dual coating. The underlying coating is based on polyvinyl acetal resin,
which can be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets
all specified wire requirements. The second coating is a bonding layer based on a thermoplastic
or thermosetting resin.
NOTE A modified resin is a resin that has undergone a chemical change, or contains one or more additives to
