FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the
two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form

International Standard IEC 60364-5-55 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 64:
Electrical installations and protection against electric shock.
The IEC 60364 series (parts 1 to 6), is currently being restructured, without any technical
changes, into a more simple form (see annex A).
According to a unanimous decision by the Committee of Action (CA/1720/RV (2000-03-21)), the
restructured parts of IEC 60364 have not been submitted to National Committees for approval.
The text of this first edition of IEC 60364-5-55 is compiled from and replaces
– part 5-551, first edition (1994),

– part 5-559, first edition (1999),
– part 5-56, first edition (1980) and its amendment 1 (1998), and
– part 3, second edition (1993), its amendment 1 (1994) and its amendment 2 (1995).
This publication has been drafted, as close as possible, in accordance with the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
This consolidated version of IEC 60364-5-55 consists of the first edition (2001) and its
amendment 1 (2001) [documents 64/1190/FDIS and 64/1201/RVD].
The technical content is therefore identical to the base edition and its amendment and has
been prepared for user convenience.
It bears the edition number 1.1.
A vertical line in the margin shows where the base publication has been modified by
amendment 1.

550  Introduction
550.1  Scope
This part of IEC 60364 covers requirements for low-voltage generating sets. Particular
requirements for supplies for safety services are given in clause 556 while clause 559 applies
to the selection and erection of luminaires and lighting installations intended to be part of the
fixed installation.
Electrical standby supply systems, other than for safety services, are outside the scope of this
standard.
This part of IEC 60364 does not apply for installations in hazardous areas (BE3).
NOTE 1  Requirements of the public supply undertaking should be ascertained before a generating set is installed
in an installation which is connected to the public supply.
NOTE 2 For additional requirements for hazardous areas, see the IEC 60079 and IEC 61241 series.

1) La CEI (Commission Électrotechnique Internationale) est une organisation mondiale de normalisation

composée de l'ensemble des comités électrotechniques nationaux (Comités nationaux de la CEI). La CEI a

La présente partie de la CEI 60364 traite des prescriptions relatives aux groupes générateurs.
Des prescriptions particulières pour l’alimentation des installations de sécurité sont données à
l'article 556 alors que l'article 559 traite du choix et de la mise en œuvre des luminaires et
des installations d’éclairage destinées à faire partie de l’installation fixe.
Les alimentations électriques de remplacement, autres que celles relatives aux installations
de sécurité, ne sont pas traitées dans le présent article.
Cette partie de la CEI 60364 ne s’applique pas aux installations dans les zones dangereuses
(conditions BE3).
NOTE 1  Il convient de s’assurer des prescriptions relatives à la distribution publique avant de mettre en œuvre un
groupe générateur dans une installation connectée au réseau de distribution public.
NOTE 2  Des prescriptions complémentaires relatives aux zones dangereuses sont données dans les séries de la

AVANT-PROPOS
1) La CEI (Commission Électrotechnique Internationale) est une organisation mondiale de normalisation
composée de l'ensemble des comités électrotechniques nationaux (Comités nationaux de la CEI). La CEI a
pour objet de favoriser la coopération internationale pour toutes les questions de normalisation dans les
domaines de l'électricité et de l'électronique. A cet effet, la CEI, entre autres activités, publie des Normes
internationales. Leur élaboration est confiée à des comités d'études, aux travaux desquels tout Comité national
intéressé par le sujet traité peut participer. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non
gouvernementales, en liaison avec la CEI, participent également aux travaux. La CEI collabore étroitement
avec l'Organisation Internationale de Normalisation (ISO), selon des conditions fixées par accord entre les
deux organisations.
2) Les décisions ou accords officiels de la CEI concernant les questions techniques représentent, dans la mesure
du possible, un accord international sur les sujets étudiés, étant donné que les Comités nationaux intéressés
sont représentés dans chaque comité d’études.
3) Les documents produits se présentent sous la forme de recommandations internationales. Ils sont publiés
comme normes, spécifications techniques, rapports techniques ou guides et agréés comme tels par les

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.

International Standard IEC 60364-5-55 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 64:
Electrical installations and protection against electric shock.
According to a unanimous decision by the Committee of Action (CA/1720/RV (2000-03-21)), the
restructured parts of IEC 60364 have not been submitted to National Committees for approval.
The text of this first edition of IEC 60364-5-55 is compiled from and replaces
– part 5-551, first edition (1994),
– part 5-559, first edition (1999),
– part 5-56, first edition (1980) and its amendment 1 (1998), and
– part 3, second edition (1993), its amendment 1 (1994) and its amendment 2 (1995).

This consolidated version of IEC 60364-5-55 consists of the first edition (2001), its
amendment 1 (2001) [documents 64/1190/FDIS and 64/1201/RVD] and its amendment 2
(2008) [documents 64/1591/CDV and 64/1627RVC].
The technical content is therefore identical to the base edition and its amendments and has
been prepared for user convenience.
It bears the edition number 1.2.
A vertical line in the margin shows where the base publication has been modified by
amendments 1 and 2.
Annex A is for information only.
The committee has decided that the contents of the base publication and its amendments will
remain unchanged until the maintenance result date indicated on the IEC web site under
"http://webstore.iec.ch" in the data related to the specific publication. At this date,
the publication will be
• reconfirmed,

This part of IEC 60364 covers requirements for the selection and erection of low-voltage
generating sets and for the selection and erection of luminaires and lighting installations
intended to be part of the fixed installation.
