Overview

IEC 60738-1-4:1998 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focused on thermistors with a directly heated positive step-function temperature coefficient. This standard provides a blank detail specification specifically tailored for sensing applications, classified under assessment level EZ. This core document outlines the framework for manufacturers to create detailed specifications that align with IEC requirements, ensuring consistency, reliability, and quality in thermistor components used in temperature sensing.

Thermistors defined by this standard are specialized ceramic components whose electrical resistance increases sharply at a certain temperature threshold - a feature critical for various sensing and protection mechanisms. The blank detail specification serves as a template, helping standardize technical data presentation, testing procedures, and quality assurance measures.

Key Topics

  • Thermistor Type and Identification
The standard defines parameters to describe thermistor characteristics including construction type, outline dimensions, and typical applications. It emphasizes identification with short descriptions, reference drawings, and application groups according to the assessment level EZ.

  • Mechanical and Electrical Specifications
Detailed aspects such as mounting methods, dimensions (in millimetres or inches), coating material and properties, terminations, and flammability data are specified. Electrical parameters include zero-power resistance, maximum operating voltage, insulation resistance for insulated thermistors, and response times.

  • Testing and Inspection Procedures
IEC 60738-1-4 mandates quality conformance testing with tables outlining lot-by-lot and periodic inspection schedules. These include visual inspections, solderability and heat resistance tests, vibration, bump and shock resistance, temperature cycling, and endurance testing at various temperatures. Sampling plans and acceptance criteria ensure reliability and traceability in production.

  • Marking and Ordering Information
Requirements for product and packaging marking follow IEC 60738-1 guidelines to ensure clear identification. The specification outlines minimum ordering information details such as style reference, maximum voltage rating, and specification issue number.

  • Coating and Packaging Details
The coating's insulating or non-insulating nature, material type, and color are to be clearly documented. Packaging instructions cover bulk or tape packing, dimensions of packaging units, and disposal methods for packaging waste.

Applications

IEC 60738-1-4:1998 thermistors are primarily used in temperature sensing applications where a positive step-function behavior is critical. Common practical applications include:

  • Thermal Protection
Devices that require fast and reliable detection of temperature thresholds to prevent overheating and fire hazards.

  • Temperature Monitoring and Control
Incorporated into automated systems for monitoring temperature changes precisely, enabling control circuits to maintain optimal operating conditions.

  • Electronic Component Safety
Used in power electronics and capacitor circuits for temperature-triggered interruption or regulation.

  • Industrial and Consumer Electronics
Applied in appliances, heating systems, and various electronic instruments requiring dependable thermal sensing performance.

The standard’s emphasis on detailed electrical and mechanical parameters ensures thermistors certified under it meet rigorous requirements for sensitive and accurate temperature detection.

all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
