Overview - ISO 8279:2008 (Aerospace hexagonal nuts, MJ threads, dimensions)
ISO 8279:2008 defines the dimensional requirements for plain, hexagonal nuts of normal height and normal across flats that use MJ threads, intended for aerospace applications. The standard covers nuts in several strength/temperature classifications (e.g., 600 MPa/120 °C, 900 MPa/425 °C, 1 550 MPa/600 °C, etc.) and is intended specifically for use when compiling aerospace product standards to ensure interchangeability, fit and assembly compatibility.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Dimensions for plain hexagonal nuts with MJ threads across multiple tensile-strength and maximum-temperature classifications.
- Dimensional data: Exact geometry, nominal sizes and tolerances are given in the standard’s Figure 1 and Table 1; dimensions are expressed in millimetres.
- Surface treatment rule: Dimensions apply after any surface coating(s) but before the application of any lubricant.
- Threading and limits: Thread specifications and limit dimensions reference ISO 5855-2 (MJ threads).
- Form and position tolerances: Conformance to ISO 8788 for tolerances of form and position.
- Lockwire provisions: Nuts with holes are intended for use with lockwire and must conform to ISO 245 lockwire diameter guidance.
- Application restriction: ISO 8279:2008 is intended only for the compilation of aerospace product standards (not general commercial use).
Practical applications and who uses this standard
ISO 8279:2008 is practical for professionals who design, specify, manufacture, procure or inspect aerospace fasteners:
- Aerospace design and stress engineers specifying fastener geometry and material class for temperature-critical assemblies.
- Fastener manufacturers producing MJ-threaded hexagonal nuts to meet aerospace dimensional interchangeability.
- Procurement and quality assurance teams ensuring incoming nuts meet dimensional and tolerance requirements for specific strength/temperature classes.
- Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations selecting compliant replacement nuts that accept lockwire or meet high-temperature service requirements.
- Standards writers compiling aerospace product standards or procurement specifications.
Related standards
- ISO 5855-2 - MJ threads: limit dimensions for bolts and nuts.
- ISO 8788 - Nuts, metric: tolerances of form and position.
- ISO 245 - Lockwire diameters (for nuts with lockwire holes).
- ISO 9139 - Procurement specification (referenced for test requirements).
By using ISO 8279:2008 in combination with these related standards, stakeholders ensure reliable dimensional compatibility, traceable specifications and safe, repeatable use of MJ-threaded hexagonal nuts in aerospace assemblies.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8279 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 20, Aircraft and space vehicles, Subcommittee SC 4,
Aerospace fastener systems.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 8279:1997), which has been technically
revised.
