Definitions of some terms used in the tyre industry - Part 2: Solid tyres

This part presents definitions of terms, in English and French, relating to solid tyres, in particular: general definitions, definitions concerning structure, components and dimensions of solid tyres. For definitions of terms relating to pneumatic tyres see Part 1. For other terms used in this field, together with their equivalents in other languages see ISO 3877. For terms relating to wheels/rims, and their definitions see ISO 3911. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (1983), in which definitions 1.2 and 2.1 have been modified.

Overview

ISO 4223-2:1991, "Definitions of some terms used in the tyre industry - Part 2: Solid tyres," is an international vocabulary standard that provides bilingual (English/French) definitions for terms specifically related to solid tyres. Published as the second edition in 1991, it cancels and replaces the 1983 edition (with modifications to definitions 1.2 and 2.1). The standard clarifies general terminology as well as terms concerning structure, components and dimensions of solid tyres used in industrial and specialist wheel applications.

Key topics

This part of ISO 4223 focuses on precise word definitions rather than test methods or performance limits. Key topics covered include:

  • General definitions: e.g., new solid tyre, rolling resistance (Fr) - with the SI unit convention (newton metre per metre, N·m/m) and its equivalence to drag force in newtons.
  • Structure-related terms: e.g., solid tyre for pneumatic-tyre rims, cylindrical (pressed-on) base, conical base.
  • Material and function classifications: e.g., anti‑static solid tyre, conductive solid tyre, oil‑resistant solid tyre, high load capacity solid tyre.
  • Component names: e.g., base reinforcement (material of low extensibility used to retain the tyre on the rim).
  • Dimensional terms: e.g., cushion height, nominal rim (wheel) diameter, solid tyre base width, overall (outside) diameter, interference fit.
  • Bilingual presentation (English/French) to support international use.

Applications and users

ISO 4223-2 is a reference vocabulary that improves clarity and consistency across documentation, design, procurement and regulation. Typical users include:

  • Tyre and wheel manufacturers and designers (standardized terminology for drawings and specifications)
  • Quality and testing laboratories (consistent term usage in reports)
  • Procurement and maintenance teams (accurate part descriptions and ordering)
  • Regulatory bodies and standards committees (harmonized language across standards)
  • Technical translators and multilingual documentation teams (bilingual term source)

By adopting the standardized vocabulary, organizations reduce ambiguity in specifications, improve communication across supply chains, and support international trade.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Esch member
body interested in a subject for which a technicai committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all
matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires
approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 4223-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 31,
