Overview

ISO 9140:1998 defines standardized test methods for metric plain or slotted (castellated) aerospace nuts with MJ threads in accordance with ISO 5855-2. The standard describes the test devices and step‑by‑step procedures to verify mechanical and dimensional performance for nuts used in aerospace construction. It is intended to be referenced by product standards, procurement specifications and used in conjunction with ISO 9139 (supply specification).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to metric plain or slotted (castellated) nuts with MJ threads for aerospace when referenced by product or procurement documents.
    • Tests are to be performed at ambient temperature.
  • Hardness testing
    • Accepted methods: Rockwell (ISO 6508), Vickers HV5–HV100 (ISO 6507‑1), superficial Rockwell (ISO 1024) and microhardness.
    • Measurements taken on bearing face or nut flat; if impossible, sectioned and mounted in thermosetting resin.
    • Surface coatings or lubricants must be removed; tested nuts are not reused.
  • Perpendicularity of bearing face
    • Uses a threaded mandrel (per ISO 5855‑2 flank diameter adjustments), a sliding ring (outer diameter ≥ nut flat size) and a shim whose thickness equals the allowable perpendicularity deviation in the product specification.
    • Nut is threaded fully onto the mandrel, ring applied and shim used to evaluate deviation.
  • Axial load (proof) test
    • Test fixture includes a hardened backing plate (>40 HRC) and a test bolt per ISO 5855‑2 with tensile strength greater than the nut.
    • Two procedures: 80% load and 100% load (values taken from procurement specification). Apply load slowly, then unload; inspect visually and, if required, metallographically (×10).
    • Tested nuts must not be reused.
  • Brittleness/fragility under stress
    • Applicable when nut hardness >39 HRC (unless otherwise specified).
    • Uses a hardened block (>40 HRC), cadmium‑plated (or equivalent) bolt, and washer. Nut torqued to specified torque using a closed socket/wrench per ISO 691 and held under axial tension for the specified time, then inspected.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it:
    • Aerospace fastener manufacturers, quality control and inspection labs, OEM procurement/specification engineers, certification bodies, and design authorities.
  • Why it matters:
    • Ensures repeatable, auditable tests for mechanical integrity and dimensional conformity of nuts used in critical aerospace joints.
    • Helps procurement and design documents cite consistent test methods and acceptance criteria for safety‑critical fastening components.

Related standards

  • ISO 5855‑2 (MJ thread dimensions)
  • ISO 9139 (supply specification for nuts)
  • ISO 6507‑1 (Vickers hardness)
  • ISO 6508 (Rockwell hardness)
  • ISO 1024 (superficial Rockwell)
  • ISO 691 (socket/wrench opening tolerances)

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 9140 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 20, Aircraft and space vehicles,
Subcommittee SC 4, Aerospace fastener systems.

3 Inspections and tests
3.1 Hardness test
3.1.1 Procedure
The procedure is a function of the nut configuration and of the available apparatus. The authorized procedures are
as follows:
 Rockwell hardness, in accordance with ISO 6508;
Vickers hardness
 HV 5 to HV 100, in accordance with ISO 6507-1;
 Rockwell superficial hardness, in accordance with ISO 1024;
 microhardness.
3.1.2 Method
This test shall be carried out at ambient temperature.
The measurement shall be taken on the bearing surface or on one of the flats.
Should this not be possible, carry out this test on a cut section after moulding the nut into a thermosetting resin.
Remove all possible coating (protection, lubrication, paint, etc.) in the measurement zone. True up the bearing
surface to obtain the required relationship. These two operations shall not generate any heat liable to modify the
characteristics of the material constituting the nut to be tested.
Carry out the test and then check conformity with the requirements of the dimensional standard or of the definition
document.
Nuts subjected to this test shall not be reused.
3.2 Bearing surface squareness test
3.2.1 Test device
The test device is illustrated in Figure 1.

3 Contrôles et essais
3.1 Contrôle de la dureté
3.1.1 Choix du procédé
Le choix du procédé est fonction de la configuration de l'écrou et de l'équipement disponible. Les procédés
autorisés sont les suivants:
 dureté Rockwell, conformément à l'ISO 6508;
 dureté Vickers HV 5 à HV 100, conformément à l'ISO 6507-1;
 dureté Rockwell superficielle, conformément à l'ISO 1024;
