Overview
ISO 4039-1:1998 is an international standard for pneumatic braking systems on road vehicles. It specifies the essential dimensions, material and surface requirements for metallic and thermoplastic pipes, male fittings and tapped holes with a facial sealing surface in the metric series. The standard applies to compressed-air braking systems operating below 2 MPa (20 bar) and is intended to ensure mechanical compatibility, sealing performance and corrosion resistance of threaded connections.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Metric pipes, male fittings and tapped holes with a facial (flat) sealing surface for vehicle pneumatic brakes using compressed air < 2 MPa.
- Dimensional requirements: External pipe diameters covered include 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20 mm. Thread series and connection-port dimensions are specified for common metric threads (examples in the standard include M10×1, M12×1.5, M14×1.5, M16×1.5, M22×1.5, M26×1.5, M27×2).
- Materials: Pipes may be metallic (e.g., steel, copper, copper alloys) or thermoplastic (e.g., polyamide) - material selection must meet the standard’s requirements.
- Surface condition: Inner and outer surfaces shall be free from oxidation, smooth and clean. The outer surface must be protected against corrosion.
- Corrosion testing: Sensitivity to corrosion is to be evaluated using one of the methods in ISO 9227 (salt spray tests), with a minimum salt spray exposure of 200 hours agreed between parties.
- Sealing & fit: Requirements cover facial sealing geometry, pitch diameter, seating faces and thread engagement to ensure proper sealing and wrench access for assembly.
- Conformity marking: Annex A provides a recommended identification statement for manufacturers to declare conformity with ISO 4039-1:1998.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 4039-1 supports practical activities across the automotive and commercial-vehicle supply chain:
- Brake system designers - ensure interchangeability and reliable sealing of pneumatic connections.
- Component manufacturers and suppliers - design and produce pipes, fittings and ports to standard dimensions.
- Vehicle OEMs and assembly plants - select compatible components, specify procurement requirements.
- Quality & test laboratories - verify dimensions, surface condition and corrosion resistance per the standard.
- Maintenance and aftermarket - ensure replacement parts meet original sealing and compatibility specifications.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 4039-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 22, Road vehicles,
Subcommittee SC 2, Braking systems and equipment.
This first edition of ISO 4039-1 cancels and replaces ISO 4039:1977, of which it constitutes a technical revision.
ISO 4039 consists of the following parts, under the general title Road vehicles — Pneumatic braking systems:
— Part 1 : Pipes, male fittings and tapped holes with facial sealing surface
— Part 2 : Pipes, male fittings and tapped holes with conical sealing surface
