Road vehicles - Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuel systems components - Part 11: Manual shut-off valve

This document specifies general information regarding the manual shut off valve component of liquefied petroleum gas fuel, intended for use on the types of motor vehicles as defined in ISO 3833. It provides general design principles and specifies requirements for instructions and marking. It also specifies test requirements for the manual shut off valve. This document is applicable to vehicles (mono-fuel, bi-fuel or dual-fuel applications) using gaseous fuels in accordance with ISO 9162. It is not applicable to the following: a) fuel containers; b) stationary gas engines; c) container mounting hardware; d) electronic fuel management; e) refuelling receptacles. NOTE 1 It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically addressed herein can be examined for compliance with the criteria of any applicable part of ISO 20766, including testing to the appropriate functional tests. NOTE 2 All references to pressure in this document are considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. NOTE 3 This document applies to devices which have a service pressure in the range of 110 kPa (Butane rich at 20 °C) and 840 kPa (Propane at 20 °C), hereinafter referred to in this document. Other service pressures can be accommodated by adjusting the pressure by the appropriate factor (ratio).

Overview

ISO 20766-11:2020 specifies requirements for the manual shut-off valve used in road vehicle liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuel systems. It covers general design principles, required markings and instructions, and specific test procedures to verify mechanical integrity and leak-tight performance. The standard applies to LPG-powered vehicles (mono‑fuel, bi‑fuel and dual‑fuel) defined by ISO 3833 and to devices with service pressures in the range of 110 kPa to 840 kPa (adjustable for other pressures by ratio).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • For LPG fuel system manual shut-off valves on motor vehicles; excludes fuel containers, stationary engines, container mounting hardware, electronic fuel management and refuelling receptacles.
  • Marking and identification
    • Must allow traceability: manufacturer/agent name, model/part number and working pressure (or working pressure/temperature range).
    • Recommended additional markings: flow direction, flow capacity, fuel type, certification symbol, approval number, serial/date code and reference to this document.
  • Construction and assembly
    • Components must meet general provisions in ISO 20766‑1 and ISO 20766‑2 and be assembled to ensure safe LPG service.
  • Test requirements
    • Hydrostatic strength: test at 2.5 × working pressure per ISO 20766‑2.
    • Leakage: verified at specified temperatures (e.g., cold, ambient, high) and pressure factors as tabulated in the standard (including low-pressure and overpressure checks).
    • Continued operation (durability): valve body filled with n‑hexane, outlet plugged; inlet subjected to 3 000 kPa or WP (whichever is greater) and cycled at a rate not faster than 10 cycles/min. Valve must remain leak‑proof after 10 000 cycles.
    • Additional applicable tests may include excess torque resistance, bending moment, corrosion, vibration, material compatibility, temperature cycling and exposure to automotive fluids as referenced.

Applications and users

  • Who uses ISO 20766-11: vehicle OEMs, LPG component manufacturers, safety and compliance engineers, test laboratories, certification bodies and aftermarket installers.
  • Practical value: ensures manual shut-off valves reliably isolate LPG flow, resist pressure and environmental stresses, and carry required identification for traceability and type approval. Useful for design validation, type approval testing and supplier quality control.
