Overview - ISO 4861:2023 (Ships and marine technology - Piling barge winches)

ISO 4861:2023 specifies requirements for the design, operation, performance and acceptance testing of hydraulic or electric winches used in piling barge winch systems. The standard covers the winches needed to operate piles and pile hammers during piling operations, including the suspending pile winch, hammer start winch, suspending hammer winch and suspending hose winch. It is intended for use in ships and marine technology applications where safe, repeatable lifting and hauling during piling is required.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & types: Defines five structural winch types - right-hand, left-hand, central model, single drum and double drum - and their orientation relative to the power source.
  • Design and materials: Manufacturers are responsible for component strength. Design must conform to ISO 7825 and referenced documents.
  • Strength limits: Stresses under rated load must not exceed 0.4 times the material’s lower yield strength (or the 0.2% proof strength); stresses under brake load must not exceed 0.9 times these strengths.
  • Braking requirements:
    • Electric winches: automatic brake capable of holding 1.5× rated load and stopping the drum from max speed without damage.
    • Hydraulic winches: brake/hold capability of 1.25× rated load with rope movement controlled within 1.0 m/min when power is lost.
    • Drum braking device: normally closed and able to support at least 1.5× rated load for both automatic and manual use.
  • Drum and rope design:
    • Design reference ropes: 6×36WS-IWRC or 6×41WS-IWRC steel‑cored ropes, 1 770 N/mm tensile wire grade (ISO 2408 referenced).
    • Minimum breaking load of rope: ≥ 5× rated load.
    • Minimum drum diameter: ≥ 18× rope diameter.
    • Drum capacity and drum design rules to ensure required rope length and proper spooling.
  • Operation & controls: Operating device directions must be clearly marked; manual controls should return automatically to braking/stop position.
  • Performance & tests: Includes light-load speed, expansion-clutch load, rated-load and brake-load tests plus defined acceptance test items.

Applications and intended users

ISO 4861:2023 is practical for:

  • Marine equipment manufacturers and winch designers
  • Shipyards, piling barge builders and naval architects
  • Offshore contractors and piling operators
  • Classification societies, inspectors and procurement teams
  • Maintenance teams setting inspection and test regimes

Use cases include design verification, procurement specifications, factory and on-site acceptance testing, safety compliance and maintenance planning for piling operations.
