BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 1874, Plastics - Specification for polyamide homopolymers, was drawn up by
Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plastics, the Secretariat of which is held by the American National Standards
Institute (ANSI).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 1874, which was circulated to
all the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in September 1969.
The Draft was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial nature, by the following Member

SPEC1 F ICATION FOR POLYAM I DE HOMOPOLYMERS
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation specifies basic grades of polyamides of the 6,66,610, 11 and 12 types. The specifica-
tion covers only homopolymers in the form of granulate.
Many applications will require polymers modified by inclusion of antioxidants, pigments, fillers or other additives
of such a type and in such a proportion as may be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser. For such materials,
and for certain specialized applications, additional test requirements may also be agreed between manufacturer
and purchaser.
2. DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this IS0 Recommendation the following definitions apply :
Polyamide 6 (PA 6). A polymer of e-caprolactam.
Polyamide 66 (PA 66). A polymer of hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid.
Polyamide 610 (PA 610). A polymer of hexamethylene diamine and sebacic acid.
Polyamide 11 (PA 11). A polymer of 1,ll-aminoundecanoic acid.
Polyamide 12 (PA 12). A polymer of 1,12-d0decanolactam.
EXPLANATION
The polymers of the lactams are designated by one number, corresponding to the number of carbon atoms in the
monomer.
The polymers of diamines and diacids are designated by two numbers, the first indicating the number of carbon
in the diamine and the second the number of carbon atoms in the diacid. These two numbers are written
atoms
concurrently without interval or hyphen.
3. DESIGNATIONS
The polyamide grades covered by this IS0 Recommendation are designated by one or two numbers, indicating the
type of polyamide (6 for PA 6,66 for PA 66,610 for PA 610, 11 for PA 11, and 12 for PA 12), followed by
three numbers, indicating respectively the range of the viscosity, the content of extractables and the use of additives.
As this IS0 Recommendation only covers basic polymers, the last number will be O.

4. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1 The granulate should be of uniform shape, the dimensions of the granules being within limits agreed between
manufacturer and purchaser. Other details, such as colour, level of contamination, uniformity, presence of
specks and disparate coloured granules, should be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.
4.2 The water content of the granulate as received by the purchaser and determined according to IS0 Recom-
mendation R 960, Plastics - Determination of the water content in polyamides, should be less than 0.25 %,
unless otherwise agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.
5. DETAIL REQUIREMENTS
The various grades should conform to the requirements listed in Tables 1 and 2. The properties should be deter-
mined on granulate, sampled from freshly opened tins or other packages.

La Recommandation ISO/R 1874, Matières plastiques - Spécifications pour les homopolyamides, a été
élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 61, Matières plastiques, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par I’American
National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à‘l’adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 No 1874 qui
fut soumis, en septembre 1969, à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO.
Le Projet a été approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités
Membres suivants :

1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 spécifie les qualités de base pour les polyamides des types 6, 66,61 O; 1 1 et 12.
La spécification s’applique seulement aux homopolymères sous forme de granulés.
De nombreuses applications exigent des polymères modifiés par l’introduction d’antioxydants, de pigments, de
charges ou d’autres additifs d’une qualité et dans une proportion teiles qu’elles puissent être acceptées à la fois
par le producteur et l’utilisateur. Pour de tels produits, et pour certaines applications spéciales, des exigences
supplémentaires peuvent aussi être convenues entre le producteur et l’utilisateur.
2. DÉFINITIONS
Pour les besoins de la présente Recommandation ISO, les définitions suivantes sont applicables :
Polyamide 6 (PA 6). Polymère de l’ecaprolactame.
66 (PA 66). Polymère de l’hexaméthylène diamine et de l’acide adipique.
Polyamide
Polyamide 610 (PA 6 10). Polymère de l’hexaméthylène diamine et de l’acide sébacique.
11 (PA 1 1). Polymère de l’acide 1,ll amino-undécanoïque.

Polyamide 12 (PA 12). Polymère du 1,12 dodécanolactame.
EXPLICATION
Les polymères des lactames sont désignés par un nombre correspondant au nombre d’atomes de carbone dans le
monomère.
Les polymères de diamines et diacides sont désignés par deux nombres, le premier indiquant le nombre d’atomes
de carbone dans le diamine et le second le nombre d’atomes de carbone dans le diacide. Ces deux nombres sont
écrits à la suite sans intervalle ni trait d’union.
3. DÉSIGNATIONS
Les qualités de polyamides couvertes par la présente Recommandation IS0 sont désignées par un ou deux nombres,
indiquant le type de polyamide (6 pour PA 6,66 pour PA 66,610 pour PA 610,ll pour PA 11 et 12 pour PA 12),
suivis de trois chiffres, indiquant respectivement l’intervalle de viscosité, la teneur en extractibles et l’utilisation
d‘additifs. Cette Recommandation IS0 ne concernant que les polymères de base, le dernier chiffre sera zéro.

4. EXIGENCES GÉNÉRALES
4.1 Les granulés doivent être d‘aspect uniforme et leurs dimensions doivent être comprises à l’intérieur des
limites acceptées par le producteur et par l’utilisateur. D’autres détails, tels que la couleur, le degré de
contamination, l’uniformité, la présence de taches et de granulés de couleur disparate doivent être convenus
entre le producteur et l’utilisateur.
4.2 La teneur en eau des granulés tels qu’ils sont reçus par l’utilisateur et déterminée selon la Recommandation
ISO/R 960, Matières plastiques - Détermination de la teneur en eau des polyamides, doit être inférieure à
0,25 %, à moins d’accord différent entre le producteur et l’utilisateur.
5. EXIGENCES PARTICULIÈRES
Les diverses qualités doivent être conformes à la liste d’exigences des Tableaux 1 et 2. Les propriétés doivent être
déterminées sur des granulés prélevés dans des boîtes ou autres emballages aussitôt après leur ouverture.
5.1 Echantiilonnage
L’échantillonnage doit être effectué d’une manière convenue entre le producteur et l’utilisateur.
5.2 Nombre de déterminations
Deux déterminations, effectuées sur deux échantillons distincts, doivent être considérées comme suffisantes
