Overview

ISO 102:1990 is an international standard established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the minimum internal diameters for gravity filling orifices used in aircraft. This standard ensures consistent dimensions for orifices used in the gravity replenishment of fuels, lubricants, and other essential fluids in aviation. It covers the proper sizing of orifices and the external diameters of associated replenishment nozzles to guarantee safe and efficient fluid transfer during aircraft servicing operations.

Key Topics

  • Orifice Diameter Specifications
ISO 102:1990 defines precise minimum and maximum internal diameters for gravity filling orifices across various fluids, including aviation gasoline (AVGAS), turbine fuel, synthetic and non-synthetic lubricants, de-icing fluids, drinking water, hydraulic fluids, coolant, and engine refrigerants. This ensures compatibility and safety in fueling and maintenance procedures.

  • Replenishment Nozzle Dimensions
The standard also specifies the external diameters of nozzles for gravity replenishment, specifically focusing on fuel nozzles for AVGAS and turbine fuel. This facilitates proper nozzle-to-orifice fitment, preventing leaks and spills during fluid transfer.

  • Fluid Compatibility and Safety
By standardizing orifice and nozzle dimensions, ISO 102:1990 helps prevent cross-contamination of fluids and supports efficient fuel and fluid handling. It also includes a recommendation to ensure that any filters fitted do not reduce the minimum internal orifice diameter, maintaining consistent flow rates.

Applications

  • Aircraft Refueling Stations
Airports and aircraft refueling companies utilize ISO 102:1990 to design and maintain fuel dispensing systems that conform to international safety and efficiency requirements.

  • Aircraft Maintenance Facilities
Maintenance organizations rely on these specifications when servicing aircraft systems that require fluid replenishment, such as lubricating engines, cooling systems, and hydraulic circuits.

  • Aviation Fluid Handling Equipment Manufacturers
Producers of refueling nozzles, filling orifices, and related components incorporate the dimensions and tolerances outlined in ISO 102 to ensure interoperability and compliance with aviation industry requirements.

  • Regulatory and Safety Compliance
Aviation authorities and safety inspectors refer to ISO 102:1990 to verify that aircraft fueling and servicing interfaces meet internationally accepted dimensional standards, contributing to operational safety.

Related Standards

  • ISO/TC 20 - Aircraft and Space Vehicles
ISO 102:1990 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 20, which covers a broad range of standards related to aircraft systems and components, ensuring cohesive regulation across the aerospace sector.

  • Fuel Quality and Handling Standards
This standard complements other ISO standards that address fuel quality, sampling, and handling procedures, reinforcing a holistic approach to aviation fueling safety.

  • Aviation Lubricants and Fluids Standards
Standards governing the formulation and testing of aviation-grade lubricants and hydraulic fluids work hand-in-hand with ISO 102 to ensure the correct delivery systems and interfaces are standardized.

By adhering to ISO 102:1990, stakeholders in the aviation industry reinforce the safety, reliability, and efficiency of fluid transfer processes, helping to maintain high operational standards across global aircraft fueling and maintenance activities.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the
work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an Interna-
tional Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies
casting a vote.
