Photography - Room-light loading packages for electronic scanners and image-setting film and paper rolls - Dimensions and related requirements

This International Standard applies to room-light loading packages either containing photographic film or paper rolls for electronic scanners or image-setting devices. It specifies the dimensions of the package and its contents, critical equipment interfacing features, and package marking. The prime aim of this International Standard is to ensure compatibility between room-light loading packages and the equipment in which it is used. Two types of package are recognized. One type uses a rigid flange into which mandrils on the exposing device are inserted. The other type uses a flexible flange and relies on the exposing equipment design to hold the roll correctly in the machine.

Overview

ISO 14535:2001 is an International Standard developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 42, focused on photography room-light loading packages designed for electronic scanners and image-setting film and paper rolls. The standard specifies the dimensions and related requirements for these packages to ensure seamless compatibility between the packaging and the specialized equipment used in photographic and imaging industries.

The standard applies to two main types of room-light loading packages:

  • Packages with a rigid flange, where mandrils on the exposing device insert into the flange.
  • Packages with a flexible flange, which rely on the device’s design to hold the roll securely.

This careful standardization aims to support accurate registration, especially critical in color imaging and high-precision electronic scanning workflows.

Key Topics

  • Dimensional specifications: ISO 14535 defines the critical dimensions of the packaging and its contents, including the internal and external diameters of flanges, flange thickness, and overall package size.
  • Flange types:
    • Rigid flanges must have specific dimensions for internal diameter, rim thickness, and external diameter tailored to fit electronic scanner mandrils.
    • Flexible flanges must provide light-tight protection while enabling easy winding and unwinding, sized according to core dimensions per ISO 3772.
  • Film and paper dimensions: The standard aligns core sizes, roll diameters, and winding orientations with ISO 3772 requirements to maintain uniformity.
  • Leader design: The leader must protect light-sensitive material during handling and machine loading. Specific guidance on its width, length, and robust splicing ensures safe, reliable usage.
  • Package marking: Clear, informative labeling on the packaging is mandatory. Markings include product name, size, storage conditions, safelight compatibility, batch number, and expiration or development dates, facilitating proper handling and traceability.
  • Compliance indication: Packages conforming to ISO 14535 must mark this compliance clearly to assure users of standard compatibility.

Applications

ISO 14535:2001 serves critical functions in the following areas:

  • Photographic film and paper production: Ensures that film and paper rolls are packed with dimensions compatible with automated exposure and scanning devices used in pre-press and imaging workflows.
  • Electronic scanners and image setters: Facilitates efficient and accurately aligned loading of photographic media in devices designed for rapid digital processing and image setting under room light conditions.
  • Pre-press industry: Standardized packaging supports automated handling and reduces errors caused by misfit packaging during film processing and printing preparation.
  • Quality assurance: Manufacturers use the standard to maintain uniformity and quality control in packaging, preventing light exposure damage and ensuring equipment compatibility.
  • International trade: Harmonizes packaging dimensions and labeling globally, simplifying logistics, and enabling interoperability across equipment from different manufacturers.

Related Standards

  • ISO 3772:2000 – Defines dimensions and related requirements for rolls of sensitized material used in the pre-press industry, closely aligned with ISO 14535 for core and roll specifications.
  • ISO 554:1976 – Specifies standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing products, relevant to measurement conditions in ISO 14535.
  • ISO 1 – Sets the standard reference temperature for geometrical product specifications, applied in the calibration and measurement procedures under ISO 14535.
  • ISO 11312:2000 – Covers dimensions and requirements for sheets of sensitized material used in the pre-press industry, complementing roll-based packaging standards.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

Introduction
Room-light operation has become increasingly attractive to users of electronic-scanner output equipment and image-
setting devices. This equipment requires accurate cassettes and a good sensitized material/equipment interface,
especially where accurate registration is an important feature, e.g. in colour work.
This International Standard is required in order to define the room-light loading packages which must interface with
the above equipment.
