Overview

ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1 is an amendment to the international standard for ophthalmic optics, specifically focusing on the transmittance specifications and test methods for uncut finished spectacle lenses. Issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this amendment introduces updated requirements and clarifications regarding wavelength cut claims and related measurement methods. By aligning testing methodologies and reporting requirements, this amendment supports improved safety, quality, and transparency across the spectacle lens industry.

Key Topics

  • Wavelength Cut Claims: Introduces and defines the concept of a "wavelength cut," specifying the lowest wavelength where the spectral transmittance of a lens reaches a certain threshold.
  • Transmittance Requirements: Updates the requirements for spectral transmittance, especially in relation to lenses that claim a specific wavelength cut. For such lenses, at the nominated wavelength, transmittance must be below 5%, and below 1% for wavelengths 10 nm shorter.
  • Measurement Uncertainty: Describes updated levels of permitted measurement uncertainties for various transmittance bands:
    • ±2.0% for spectral transmittance above 20%
    • ±1.0% for 5%–20% range
    • ±0.5% for below 5% transmittance
  • Test Equipment and Methodology: Specifies use of calibrated spectrophotometers, spectral bandwidth not exceeding 2 nm, and a reference plano lens of 2.0 mm thickness (±0.3 mm).
  • Information Disclosure: Clarifies manufacturer and supplier requirements on the packaging or documentation, including the ability to provide key data in hard copy or digital form, such as QR or data matrix codes.
  • Annex G – Measurement Parameters: Provides informative background on factors affecting wavelength cut measurements, including lens geometry and instrument configuration. Emphasizes the impact of lens thickness and instrument variability on measurements.

Applications

ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1 has practical value for a range of stakeholders in the ophthalmic optics sector, including:

  • Manufacturers of Spectacle Lenses: Ensures that products claiming specific wavelength cut-offs are reliably tested and labeled, facilitating regulatory compliance and enhancing consumer safety.
  • Testing Laboratories: Provides detailed and updated test methods for measuring spectral transmittance, reducing variability and improving confidence in test results.
  • Quality Assurance: Supports robust QA systems with clearer uncertainty parameters and harmonized methods for evaluating transmittance characteristics.
  • Retailers and Distributors: Enables accurate communication of product features such as UV protection and blue light filtering, both on packaging and via digital formats.
  • Regulatory Bodies: Facilitates market surveillance and product approval decisions based on standardized and transparent test criteria.

Related Standards

Organizations and professionals working with ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1 may also reference the following relevant standards for comprehensive compliance and best practices:

  • ISO 8980 Series: Covers the broader requirements and test methods for uncut finished spectacle lenses.
  • ISO/IEC Guide 98-3: Offers guidelines for evaluating measurement uncertainty.
  • ISO 18526-2:2020: Provides advice on measurement uncertainty for lenses, particularly in Annex B.
  • ISO/TC 172/SC 7 Standards: Additional standards related to ophthalmic optics and instruments.

By adhering to ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1, stakeholders ensure accuracy in spectrophotometric measurement, clear documentation, and enhanced product reliability, supporting both regulatory and consumer needs in the global spectacle lens market.
