Overview

ISO 1234:1997 is an internationally recognized standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the characteristics, dimensions, and requirements for split pins. This second edition replaces the first edition from 1976, reflecting technical revisions to ensure up-to-date specifications for manufacturing and usage.

Split pins, also known as cotter pins, are essential fasteners widely used in mechanical engineering and construction industries. They serve as locking devices that secure nuts or other fasteners by passing through a hole in a bolt or shaft and then bending the pin legs to prevent loosening.

The standard provides detailed guidance on dimensions, materials, surface finishes, and designations to ensure compatibility, reliability, and safety in fastening applications worldwide.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
ISO 1234 defines standard parameters for split pins to promote uniformity and interchangeability in engineering assemblies.

  • Dimensions and Sizes
The document specifies nominal diameters ranging from 0.6 mm to 20 mm and corresponding lengths with defined minimum and maximum values. Tables provide precise measurements for pin diameter, length, and leg dimensions to accommodate various bolt and clevis pin diameters.

  • Materials and Surface Finishes
    Recommended materials include:

    • Steel (St)
    • Copper-zinc alloys (Cu Zn)
    • Copper (Cu)
    • Aluminium alloys (Al)
    • Austenitic stainless steel (A)
Surface treatment options include electroplated coatings (per ISO 4042) and phosphate conversion coatings (per ISO 9717), ensuring corrosion resistance and durability.
  • Mechanical Properties
The standard mandates that each leg of the split pin must withstand bending back upon itself without visible fracture, ensuring ductility and mechanical integrity.

  • Workmanship and Quality
Pins must be free of burrs, irregularities, and detrimental defects with an eye as circular as possible. The combined cross-section of the two legs should also be circular. Acceptance inspection follows ISO 3269 guidelines.

  • Designation System
A clear designation format is defined for specifying nominal size, length, and material type - for example, "Split pin ISO 1234 – 5 50 – St" represents a steel split pin with a nominal size of 5 mm and length of 50 mm.

Applications

ISO 1234 split pins are widely used across multiple sectors including:

  • Mechanical and Structural Engineering
Used to secure bolt assemblies, preventing components from loosening under vibrations or dynamic loads.

  • Automotive and Aerospace
Ensuring the reliability of fasteners in safety-critical applications by locking nuts and shafts in place.

  • Railway Systems
Specialized recommendations apply for railway clevis pins, including the use of larger pin sizes when subjected to transverse alternating forces for enhanced durability.

  • General Manufacturing
Fastening various machinery components where reliable, tamper-resistant locking is required.

The standard supports global supply chains by enabling manufacturers, engineers, and quality control teams to adopt consistent, verified dimensions and materials for split pins.

Related Standards

  • ISO 4042 – Fasteners – Electroplated coatings (under revision)
  • ISO 9717:1990 – Phosphate conversion coatings for metals – Requirement specifications

These referenced standards complement ISO 1234 by detailing inspection methods, coating processes, and quality assurance practices necessary to maintain split pin performance and longevity.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 1234 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 2, Fasteners.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 1234:1976),
