Overview

ISO 6443:2005, titled "Door leaves - Method for measurement of height, width, thickness and squareness," is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This standard specifies a precise and uniform method for measuring the key physical dimensions-height, width, thickness-and assessing the squareness defects of door leaves, primarily focusing on rectangular doors but also applicable to other shapes.

The standard ensures consistent quality control, dimensional accuracy, and compliance across door manufacturing, installation, and inspection processes. By following ISO 6443, manufacturers and quality inspectors can reliably evaluate door leaves to meet industry requirements, facilitating interoperability and safety in building construction.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Measurement
Applies to all rectangular door leaves and measurable parameters of non-rectangular doors, emphasizing height, width, thickness, and squareness assessment.

  • Measurement Instruments

    • Steel tape or equivalent device with 0.5 mm precision for height and width
    • Micrometer or similar instrument with 0.01 mm precision for thickness
    • Metal square with adjustable arms (500 ± 1 mm), precise to 0.1 mm, equipped with an analog or digital dial gauge for squareness measurement
  • Measurement Procedures

    • Height and width measured to the nearest 1 mm along lines 20 ± 5 mm from edges
    • Thickness measured in 6 specific points around the door leaf with 0.1 mm precision
    • Squareness assessed at all four corners, measuring deviation from right angles with 0.1 mm accuracy
  • Environmental Conditions
Testing and storage should occur in a non-destructive environment between 15 °C and 30 °C and humidity levels between 25% and 75% to ensure measurement reliability.

  • Reporting Requirements
Test reports must include references to ISO 6443:2005, identification details of the door leaf, material and construction specifics, environmental conditions during testing, measured values with maximal deviations, laboratory name, and date of testing.

Practical Applications

ISO 6443:2005 is essential in multiple sectors, ensuring that door leaves meet precise dimensional specifications and functional quality:

  • Manufacturing Quality Control
Production facilities use the standard to verify compliance of door leaves with design specifications before shipment, minimizing returns and rework.

  • Construction and Installation
Contractors and installers confirm door dimensions and squareness on-site, ensuring proper fitting within frames and avoiding operational issues.

  • Building Renovation and Inspection
Inspectors and architects apply this standard to evaluate existing doors for wear, damage, or compliance with updated building codes.

  • Product Certification and Compliance
Certification bodies leverage ISO 6443 during conformity assessments to validate product uniformity, safety, and performance.

  • Custom Door Fabrication
Enables precise dimensioning for bespoke or complex-shaped doors, maintaining measurement consistency across different designs.

Related Standards

  • EN 951:1998 – The European equivalent, harmonized with ISO 6443, covering the same measurement methods for door leaves, facilitating broad regional adoption.

  • EN 1529 – Defines tolerance requirements for door dimensions, linked closely to the measurement methods established in ISO 6443.

  • ISO/TC 162 – The technical committee responsible for doors and windows standards, under which ISO 6443 was developed.

  • Building Code Standards – ISO 6443 supports compliance with national and international building regulations by standardizing door measurements.

By adhering to ISO 6443:2005, stakeholders across the door production and construction industries can ensure accurate dimension verification, improving product quality, installation efficiency, and compliance with international norms. This promotes market acceptance and user safety through reliable, standardized measurement practices.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 6443 was prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 33, Doors, windows, shutters, building hardware
and curtain walling (as EN 951:1998) and was adopted, under a special “fast-track procedure”, by Technical
Committee ISO/TC 162, Doors and windows in parallel with its approval by the ISO member bodies.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 6443:1980) which has been technically revised.
Throughout the text of this document, read “. this European Standard .” to mean “. this International

Avant-propos
votants.
