Overview

ISO 10383:2012, titled Securities and related financial instruments – Codes for exchanges and market identification (MIC), is an international standard developed by ISO. It establishes a universal system for identifying exchanges, trading platforms, regulated or non-regulated markets, and trade reporting facilities. This standard facilitates automated processing and accurate communication by providing unique, standardized Market Identifier Codes (MICs).

The scope includes identification of:

  • Places where financial instruments are officially listed (places of official listing)
  • Venues where related trades are executed (places of trade)
  • Facilities where trade details are reported (trade reporting facilities)

The standard is applicable for any application or communication that requires clear identification of financial market locations, ensuring consistency and interoperability globally.

Key Topics

Market Identifier Codes (MICs)

  • Format: MICs are composed of four alphanumeric characters without intrinsic meaning assigned to any character.
  • Types:
    • Operating/exchange MIC: Identifies the overall exchange, market, or reporting entity within a specific country or market.
    • Market segment MIC: Identifies a specialized segment within an exchange or market (e.g., bonds market, equities market, or dark pools). These are registered only if the operating/exchange MIC exists.

Structure and Usage

  • MICs are linked hierarchically: market segment MICs reference their parent operating/exchange MIC.
  • Example:
    • ABCD – Operating/exchange MIC for "Stock Exchange ABC"
    • ABC5 – Segment MIC for "Stock Exchange ABC – Bonds Market"
    • ABCZ – Segment MIC for "Stock Exchange ABC – Equities Market"
  • The standard ensures distinct identification whether at an operating level or more granular market segment level.

Registration and Maintenance

  • A Registration Authority (RA) manages MIC registration.
  • MIC attributes tracked include country, ISO country code, MIC code, type (operating or segment), institution description, operating MIC (for segments), acronym, city, website, creation and modification dates, status, and comments for clarification.
  • The RA website provides the application process and access to the MIC list for use in financial systems globally.

Applications

ISO 10383:2012 is vital for:

  • Financial data providers who aggregate market prices and trade information from multiple exchanges.
  • Trading platforms and brokers requiring precise market identification to process orders and report trades accurately.
  • Regulatory reporting and compliance systems depending on standardized market identifiers.
  • Financial software development, enabling automated handling and integration of market and trade data.
  • Post-trade processing, clearing, and settlement workflows needing consistent reference to trade execution venues.
  • Market surveillance and analytics by uniquely identifying market segments or venues.

Implementing ISO 10383 ensures smoother interoperability between global financial institutions and systems, reduces errors in market data communication, and supports transparent and efficient financial market infrastructure.

Related Standards

ISO 10383:2012 works alongside several key international standards, including:

  • ISO 3166-1: Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions – country codes are integral for MIC country identification.
  • ISO 10962 (CFI Codes): Classification of financial instruments complements MICs by standardizing instrument types.
  • ISO 15022 / ISO 20022: Messaging standards that utilize MICs in trade and settlement instructions.
  • Relevant regulatory frameworks and data standards implemented by financial market authorities and organizations worldwide.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies
casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of

ISO 10383 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 68, Financial services, Subcommittee SC 4,

ISO/IEC,
