Abstract

This document describes a classification of metallic blast-cleaning abrasives for the preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products. It specifies the characteristics which are required for the complete designation of such abrasives. This document applies to abrasives supplied in the "new" or unused condition only. It does not apply to abrasives either during or after use. NOTE Although this document has been developed specifically to meet requirements for the preparation of steelwork, the properties specified are generally appropriate when preparing other material surfaces, or components, using blast-cleaning techniques. These techniques are described in ISO 8504-2 [7].

ISO 11124-1:2026 is an International Standard from ISO for metallic blast-cleaning abrasives used to prepare steel substrates before paints and related products are applied. ISO 11124-1:2026 classifies these abrasives, sets the characteristics needed for their full designation, and defines how they are identified on orders and packages. It is intended for suppliers, purchasers, and users who need a common specification for new, unused abrasive material.

What does ISO 11124-1:2026 specify?

ISO 11124-1:2026 specifies a classification system for metallic blast-cleaning abrasives used in preparation of steel before coating. It covers abrasives in the new or unused condition only, so it is about what is purchased and supplied, not material after service.

The document is organized into scope, terms and definitions, classification, designation, and package identification and lot traceability, followed by a bibliography. The scope also notes that the properties are generally suitable for other surfaces prepared by blast-cleaning, with the technique described in ISO 8504-2.

What are the key requirements of ISO 11124-1:2026?

ISO 11124-1:2026 requires a clear classification, a full product designation, and marked packaging so the abrasive can be specified and traced in practice. The main technical points are in Clause 4 to Clause 6.

  • Clause 4.1 classifies abrasives by material, origin, or manufacture. Table 1 gives the abbreviated codes for the commonly used metallic abrasives. In practice, this gives buyers and suppliers a shared code for the abrasive family being ordered.

  • Clause 4.1 links abrasive type to the comparator used for surface profile assessment. Table 1 identifies the comparator type associated with each abrasive family. This matters when the blast-cleaned surface profile is checked against the comparator method.

  • Clause 4.2 classifies the initial particle shape. The standard uses the symbols for shot, grit, cylindrical, and irregular shapes. In practice, this tells users what shape they are buying, which affects the resulting surface appearance and profile.

  • Clause 4.3 classifies the particle size range. A three-digit number represents the grade or nominal particle size in millimetres multiplied by 100. This makes size selection and ordering precise enough for procurement and quality control.

  • Clause 5 defines the full product designation. The designation uses the term “Abrasive ISO 11124”, the Table 1 abbreviation, the Table 2 particle-shape symbol, and the grade number; if applicable, the Vickers hardness (HV) range is also stated. In practice, this gives one complete order description that reduces ambiguity.

  • Clause 5 requires the full designation on all orders. The examples show how the material code, shape, grade, and hardness range are combined. This is important because the purchase order becomes the controlling specification for supply.

  • Clause 6 covers package identification and lot traceability. The unit of sale is to be labelled with the full product coding, including hardness range if applicable, and sub-units are to carry the particle-shape and grade codes. Additional traceability marking is recommended at pallet, drum, or box level, which helps with stock control and investigation of nonconforming material.

What terms does ISO 11124-1:2026 define?

ISO 11124-1:2026 defines the basic language used to describe metallic blast-cleaning abrasives.

  • Blast-cleaning abrasive - a solid material intended for abrasive blast-cleaning.
  • Abrasive blast-cleaning - the impact of a high-kinetic-energy stream of blast-cleaning abrasive onto the surface being prepared.
  • Shot - predominantly round particles with no edges, broken faces, or other sharp surface defects.
  • Grit - predominantly angular particles with fractured faces and sharp edges.
  • Cylindrical - sharp-edged particles with a 1:1 diameter-to-length ratio and faces cut approximately at right angles to the centreline.
  • Irregular - predominantly non-uniform particles with no edges, broken faces, or other sharp surface defects.

Who uses ISO 11124-1:2026?

ISO 11124-1:2026 is used by abrasive manufacturers, distributors, coating contractors, steel fabricators, and procurement or quality teams that specify blast-cleaning media. It is especially relevant to people preparing steel substrates before painting or applying related products, because the abrasive type, shape, and size directly affect the prepared surface. Inspection and quality staff also use it when checking whether supplied abrasive matches the ordered designation and packaging information.

What changed in ISO 11124-1:2026 from the previous edition?

ISO 11124-1:2026 cancels and replaces ISO 11124-1:2018. The main changes stated in the standard are:

  • definition 3.6 was added;
  • Table 1 and Table 2 were technically revised;
  • Annex A was removed and references were added to the bibliography.

Which standards are used with ISO 11124-1:2026?

ISO 11124-1:2026 is used with a family of related standards for abrasives, surface condition, and surface-preparation methods.

  • ISO 11124 (all parts) - the series of specifications for metallic blast-cleaning abrasives.
  • ISO 11125 (all parts) - test methods for metallic blast-cleaning abrasives.
  • ISO 11126 (all parts) - specifications for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives.
  • ISO 11127 (all parts) - test methods for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives.
  • ISO 8501-1 - visual assessment of steel surface cleanliness and preparation grades.
  • ISO 8503-2 - comparator procedure for grading the surface profile of abrasive blast-cleaned steel.
  • ISO 8504-2 - abrasive blast-cleaning methods.

What does the ISO 11124-1:2026 document contain?

ISO 11124-1:2026 contains a classification table for metallic abrasives, a table of initial particle shapes, and guidance for assigning a complete product designation. It also includes two designation examples that show how material type, shape, grade, and hardness range are combined for ordering and labelling.

The document gives package identification and lot traceability guidance for commercial units and sub-units. Its front matter includes a safety warning about hazards from surface-preparation equipment, materials, and abrasives, and a short bibliography links this part to related ISO standards used for testing, surface assessment, and blast-cleaning practice.

Abrasive blast-cleaning techniques are widely used to clean and prepare surfaces. During the development
of a series of International Standards dealing with the preparation of steel substrates before application
of paints and related products, it was decided that a need existed for a series of International Standards
covering those blast-cleaning abrasives commonly used in preparation of steelwork.
The type of blast-cleaning abrasive used and its particle shape can significantly affect the surface appearance

iv
Introduction
[1]
