This document specifies a field method for the determination of water-soluble chlorides in non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. This field method is provided as a kit with all components and premeasured extraction solution. This document differs from ISO 11127-7 in that equal volumes of the sample of abrasive and extraction solution are used for the determination of chloride level in the abrasive. In comparison, ISO 11127-7 uses a weight to volume ratio of abrasive to solvent (deionized water) to extract soluble salts from the abrasive. It is intended for use in the field as compared to ISO 11127-7, which is well suited for use in the laboratory.

This document specifies requirements for 13 grades of cut steel wire abrasives, as supplied for blast-cleaning processes. It specifies ranges of particle sizes, together with corresponding grade designations. Values are specified for hardness, density, defect/structural requirements, metallographic structure and chemical composition. This document is suitable for cut steel wire supplied for blast-cleaning processes which is made by cutting new cold drawn wire. The requirements specified in this document apply to abrasives manufactured from virgin wire supplied in the new and unconditioned state only. ISO 11127-6:2011 specifies a method for the determination of water-soluble contaminants in non-metallic blast-cleanlng abrasives by conductivity measurement.

ISO 11127-1:2011 specifies a method for the sampling of non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives from consignments and for the subdivision of the sample into quantities suitable for undertaking the appropriate test methods specified in other parts of ISO 11127.

ISO 11127-2:2011 specifies a method for the determination of the particle size distribution of non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives by sieving.

ISO 11127-4:2011 specifies a method of assessing whether a non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasive has a minimum hardness of 6 on Mohs' scale.

ISO 11127-7:2011 specifies a method for the determination of water-soluble chlorides in non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives.

ISO 11127-5:2011 specifies a method for the determination of the level of free moisture present in non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. It is determined by measuring the mass lost on heating.

Gives requirements for blast-cleaning abrasives from fused aluminium oxide (corundum). Specifies ranges of particle sizes and values for apparent density, bulk density, Mohs hardness, moisture content, conductivity of aqueous extract and water-soluble chlorides.

The procedure includes weighing a test portion of approximately 100 g into a container, placing the container with the test portion in an oven previously adjusted to 110 °C, leaving for at least 1 h, transferring the container to a desiccator, allowing to cool to room temperature, reweighing the container with the dried test portion, determining the mass of the dried test portion. Annex A gives information on the international standards series for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives ISO 11126 and ISO 11127.

The procedure includes drying a sufficient quantity of the sample by heating, allowing to cool to room temperature, adding distilled or deionized water to the cleaned, dried and weighed pyknometer containing 10 g of the dried sample until it is completely filled, displacing air adhering to the test portion, drying the outside of the pyknometer, reweighing the pyknometer and its contents, emptying the pyknometer, refilling with distilled or deionized water, drying the outside and weighing again. Annex A gives information on the international standards series for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives ISO 11126 and ISO 11127.

The procedure includes examining a small quantity of the sample under the microscope and, if grains of different colours or diameter are present, selecting a few grains of each, placing the selected grains between two glass microscope slides and, whilst applying pressure, slowly moving one slide over the other with a reciprocating motion for 10 s, examining the glass surfaces for scratches. The object of the method is to assess whether the sample has a minimum hardness of 6 on Mohs' scale.
