This International Standard specifies a method of measuring the smoothness of Paper and board, called the Bekk method. The smoothness of a wide range of Papers and boards may be measured by this method and it is especially recommended for smooth Papers and boards. However, for very smooth samples, measurement times may be impractically long. This method is not recommended for materials greater than 0,5 mm thick or very permeable Papers and board, since the amount of air passing through the test piece tan influence the result. It is not recommended for newsprint and it is not suitable for rough Papers and boards.

Ta mednarodni standard določa metodo za merjenje gladkosti papirja, kartona in lepenke, imenovano Bekkova metoda. S to metodo se lahko meri gladkost različnih vrst papirjev, kartonov in lepenk, in še posebej je priporočljiva za gladke papirje, kartone in lepenke. Vendar pa je čas merjenja za izredno gladke vzorce lahko predolg in zato nepraktičen. Ta metoda se ne priporoča za materiale, ki so debelejši od 5,5 mm, ali za zelo prepustne papirje, kartone in lepenke, saj lahko količina zraka, ki prehaja skozi preskušanca, vpliva na rezultate.
