Overview

oSIST prEN 1337-8:2018, published by SIST, is a standard within the EN 1337 series that addresses structural bearings, specifically focusing on guide bearings and restraint bearings. The document sets out comprehensive rules for the design, testing, and manufacture of these bearings, particularly in cases where the load transmission occurs in the x- and y-plane as detailed in prEN 1337-1:2018. This standard is primarily intended for use in conjunction with the other relevant parts of the EN 1337 series, ensuring consistent approaches to structural bearing requirements within civil engineering and building works across Europe.

Key Topics

  • Types of Bearings

    • Guide Bearings: These bearings provide restraint in one horizontal direction, allow for necessary rotations, and do not transmit vertical loads.
    • Restraint Bearings: These bearings prevent movement within a plane, accommodate rotations, and do not transmit loads perpendicular to that plane.
  • Material Properties

    • Guide and restraint bearings must be made from ferrous materials in accordance with recognized European standards such as the EN 10025 series, EN 10083-3, EN 10088-2, and EN 10340.
    • Sliding contact surfaces must comply with prEN 1337-2:2018.
  • Design Requirements

    • Bearings must transmit loads according to prEN 1337-1:2018, allow specified movements and rotations, and include frictional resistance as per prEN 1337-2:2018.
    • Interactive effects must be considered when bearings are combined with other structural elements.
    • Minimum base plate thickness and other geometrical requirements ensure longevity and consistent performance.
  • Testing and Quality Control

    • Testing requirements reference prEN 1337-1:2018 and prEN 1337-2:2018.
    • Factory production control includes dimension checks, surface roughness, corrosion protection, and raw material verification.
    • Assessment of performance includes both type testing and ongoing factory controls.
  • Compliance and Marking

    • The standard supports compliance with Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 related to construction products, facilitating the use of CE marking and Declarations of Performance (DoP) for bearings.

Applications

Guide bearings and restraint bearings covered by oSIST prEN 1337-8:2018 are essential components in civil engineering and building works where precise control of structural movement and load transmission is required. Typical applications include:

  • Bridges and Viaducts: Managing thermal expansion, seismic movements, and traffic-induced forces.
  • Building Structures: Allowing controlled movement while maintaining structural integrity and safety.
  • Heavy Civil Engineering: Employed in infrastructure exposed to dynamic loads where reliability and compliance with EU standards are critical.

The application of this standard ensures that both guide and restraint bearings meet rigorous performance, safety, and durability standards, which are crucial for the long-term reliability of major structures.

Related Standards

For holistic implementation and compliance, oSIST prEN 1337-8:2018 references several other standards:

  • prEN 1337-1:2018 - General requirements for structural bearings
  • prEN 1337-2:2018 - Requirements for sliding elements
  • prEN 1337-5:2018 - Pot bearings
  • EN 1993 (Eurocode 3) - Design of steel structures
  • EN 10025, EN 10083-3, EN 10088-2, EN 10340 - Material specifications for steel and steel products

By aligning design, manufacturing, and testing practices with these standards, organizations ensure structural bearing performance that meets both national and European regulatory requirements. This approach facilitates interoperability, safety, and quality assurance in the construction sector.
