Overview

SIST EN IEC 62841-2-12:2024/A11:2024 specifies the particular safety requirements and testing protocols for electric motor-operated hand-held concrete vibrators. As an amendment to EN IEC 62841-2-12:2024, this standard harmonizes national safety benchmarks across European regions, supporting manufacturers and professionals in aligning with both safety best practices and European legislation, including the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

The standard is part of the broader IEC 62841 series, focused on electric hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery, ensuring uniform safety parameters for powered equipment used in construction and landscaping.

Key Topics

  • Scope Expansion:

    • Clarifies safety evaluation excludes noise hazards for vibrators’ parts immersed in concrete during normal use.
    • Specifies that transportable concrete vibrators or those operated via remote motors are not covered.
  • Testing Procedures:

    • Detailed methods for noise and vibration measurement considering operational conditions.
    • Modified requirements for immersion and mounting during tests to accurately reflect real use safety scenarios.
  • Marking and Instructions:

    • Requirements for clear indication of sound pressure levels for certain designs.
    • Obligations for comprehensive user instructions to facilitate correct usage and enhance jobsite safety.
  • Battery Tool Safety:

    • Introduction of mandatory isolation and disabling devices for tools with integrated batteries.
    • Ensures safe maintenance by disconnecting power sources and preventing unintended tool operation.
  • Conformity to EU Directives:

    • Aligns safety requirements and test procedures directly with essential health and safety requirements in Directive 2006/42/EC.

Applications

Hand-held concrete vibrators are extensively used in construction for consolidating poured concrete, ensuring structural integrity and preventing voids. Compliance with SIST EN IEC 62841-2-12:2024/A11:2024 supports:

  • Manufacturers:

    • Streamlined path to CE marking for electric concrete vibrators.
    • Reduced risks during maintenance and operation by providing isolation/disabling solutions for battery-powered tools.
    • Assurance that products meet up-to-date European safety regulations.
  • Construction Firms/Contractors:

    • Enhanced safety for site workers operating hand-held vibrators.
    • Clear guidelines for equipment selection, operation, and inspection.
  • Test Laboratories and Inspectors:

    • Consistent benchmarks for evaluating compliance of concrete vibration equipment.
    • Up-to-date test methodologies for vibration and acoustic exposure.

Related Standards

This standard should be used in conjunction with:

  • EN IEC 62841-1:2015 and EN IEC 62841-1:2015/A11:2022:
    • General safety requirements for electric motor-operated tools.
  • EN ISO 12100:
    • Provides the fundamental principles for risk assessment and risk reduction in machinery safety.
  • Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive):
    • Overarching legal framework for the safety requirements applicable in the European Economic Area.

These standards together provide a harmonized safety regime for electric hand-held tools, enabling sustainable development, innovation, and legal compliance in the construction equipment sector.

Keywords: hand-held concrete vibrator safety, IEC 62841-2-12 compliance, battery tool isolation device, noise/vibration emission testing, CE marking directive, construction equipment standards, electric power tool safety.

listing of these bodies can be found on the CENELEC website.
1 Modification to Clause 1, “Scope”
Add the following to the Scope:
“Concrete vibrators or parts of them immersed in concrete during normal use are considered not to cause any
hazard due to noise.
NOTE Transportable concrete vibrators or concrete vibrators where the vibrator bottle is driven by a transportable
motor either standing on ground or carried on the back of the operator are not covered by this document.”
2 Modification to Clause 5, “General conditions for the tests”
Replace the existing 5.101 with the following:
"5.101  For tests conducted at normal load, during operation, the vibrator bottle is immersed centrally in a
container filled with an amount of water corresponding to at least 50 times the volume of the vibrator bottle. The
height of the container is such that no water can splash out during the test. During the tests, the vibrator bottle
is held or suspended such that the vibrator bottle does not make contact with the wall or bottom of the conta
