Elastomeric Seals - Materials requirements for pipe joint seals used in water and drainage applications - Part 2: Thermoplastic elastomers

This standard specifies requirements for materials used for moulded seals only of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) used in joints of:
1) thermoplastic piping systems for non pressure waste water discharge (intermittent flow up to 95°C) inside buildings; 2) thermoplastic piping systems for non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage (continuous flow up to 45°C and intermittent flow up to 95°C);
3) thermoplastic rainwater piping systems. General requirements for finished joint seals are also given; any additional requirements called for by the particular application are specified in the relevant product standards taking into account that the performance of pipe joints is a function of the seal material properties, seal geometry and pipe joint design.

Overview

EN 681-2:2000 - Elastomeric Seals: Materials requirements for pipe joint seals used in water and drainage applications - Part 2: Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE) - specifies material requirements for moulded TPE seals used in non-pressure thermoplastic piping systems. The standard addresses seals for indoor wastewater (intermittent flow up to 95°C), underground drainage and sewerage (continuous up to 45°C, intermittent up to 95°C), and thermoplastic rainwater piping. It also provides general requirements for finished joint seals while noting that additional, application-specific requirements are set out in relevant product standards.

Key Topics

  • Scope & applicability
    • Material requirements limited to moulded TPE seals for non-pressure thermoplastic piping systems.
    • Applications include non-pressure wastewater, underground drainage/sewerage, and rainwater systems.
  • Temperature performance limits
    • Intermittent service up to 95°C (indoor wastewater and intermittent flow cases).
    • Continuous underground drainage up to 45°C; intermittent exposure up to 95°C.
  • Material characteristics
    • Requirements focus on the suitability of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) for long-term sealing performance.
    • Emphasis on properties that influence sealing: compound quality, aging resistance, and dimensional stability.
  • Design interaction
    • Recognises that joint performance depends on seal material properties, seal geometry, and pipe joint design.
  • Finished seal requirements
    • General provisions for finished joint seals are included; product standards provide any additional application-specific criteria.

Applications

  • Building services: internal waste and soil stacks, sanitary appliance connections where non-pressure wastewater flows intermittently at elevated temperatures.
  • Civil drainage: underground non-pressure drainage and sewer systems where continuous service temperatures are typically lower.
  • Rainwater systems: external thermoplastic rainwater piping where TPE seals resist environmental exposure and provide reliable joints.
  • Who uses this standard
    • Seal and TPE manufacturers (material selection and compound specification)
    • Pipe and joint system designers (ensuring compatibility of seal material and geometry)
    • Testing laboratories and certification bodies (material compliance checks)
    • Specifiers, installers, and authorities responsible for water and drainage systems

Related Standards

  • EN 681 series (other parts cover different elastomer types and requirements)
  • Relevant product and piping standards that define joint performance criteria and application-specific tests

EN 681-2:2000 is essential for ensuring that TPE pipe joint seals meet recognized material requirements for reliable performance in water and drainage applications.
