SIST EN 4619:2010 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 4619:2010, prepared by ASD-STAN and published through CEN (European Committee for Standardization). It specifies how to install and remove self-locking MJ thread inserts with self-broaching keys for aerospace applications. The document covers hole profile, tools, inspection checks, minimum self-locking torque, and replacement steps.

What does SIST EN 4619:2010 specify?

SIST EN 4619:2010 specifies the installation and removal procedure for self-locking, self-broaching key, MJ thread inserts defined by EN standards for aerospace use. In practice, it tells the installer how to prepare the hole, choose the tool, check the fitted insert, and remove or repair it later.

The document is organized into clauses on insert information, pre-installation inspection, installation tools, position and broaching checks, self-locking torque inspection, and insert replacement.

ClauseWhat it covers
3Insert information and cross-references between insert reference, bolt thread, and tapped hole
4Inspection before installation
5Installation tools and hand/air-pressure installation
6Checks of insert position and keys broaching
7Minimum self-locking torque inspection
8Insert removal and repair

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 4619:2010?

Select the correct insert and hole

Clause 3 links each insert reference to the related bolt thread and tapped hole diameter in Tables 1 to 3, with Table 4 giving the special MJS13×1 limits. This matters because the insert, the bolt thread, and the prepared hole must match before assembly starts.

Prepare the parts before installation

Clause 4 requires the installation hole to be free from burrs, foreign objects, grease, and oil, and the insert itself to be clean and free from protective grease. That basic cleaning step reduces the risk of thread damage and poor seating.

Use the proper tool and installation method

Clause 5 says to use the appropriate tool for each insert reference, and it warns that the tools and methods shown are basic principles rather than mandatory designs. The practical point is that the tool must achieve correct installation without damaging the threads or the locking zone.

Clause 5 separates hand installation from air-pressure installation. Hand installation uses a combined screwing and broaching tool, while the air-pressure method uses a gun-mounted tool that screws, broaches, and then unscrews automatically. In both cases, the insert is lubricated as specified on the assembly drawing, and aluminium or magnesium components may need an external compound to limit galvanic corrosion.

Check insert position and broaching

Clause 6 requires an inspection gauge common to all insert dimensions to verify the insert depth and the key installation depth. After broaching, the component surface must not show distortion or cracks. This is the acceptance check that confirms the insert sits correctly and the keys have been set properly.

Verify minimum self-locking torque

Clause 7 requires the installed insert to meet the minimum self-locking torque in Table 6. The check uses a low third pitch diameter passivated stainless steel test bolt without lubrication, and the installer is responsible for the test sample size and frequency. Worn or damaged test bolts are not to be used.

Remove and replace inserts safely

Clause 8 gives the removal sequence: locally machine or drill the key area if needed, deflect the keys inward, unscrew the insert with the extraction tool, and remove any remaining fragments. After removal, the tapped hole is checked with a threaded plug gauge. If the hole is sound, a new insert of the same part number may be fitted; otherwise, a first or second repair size insert may be used when the design allows.

What terms does SIST EN 4619:2010 define?

  • MJ threads - The aerospace thread form used for the insert and bolt thread references in this standard.
  • Self-locking torque - The minimum torque needed to turn the installed insert, used as a retention check.
  • Self-broaching keys - Keys that are set into the component during installation to lock the insert.
  • Tapped hole - The threaded hole in the component that receives the insert.
  • Repair size insert - An oversize insert used after removal when the original hole must be repaired.
  • Threaded plug gauge - A gauge used after removal to check the tapped hole dimensions.

Who uses SIST EN 4619:2010?

SIST EN 4619:2010 is used by aerospace design engineers, assembly technicians, maintenance and repair organizations, and quality inspectors. It also helps tooling suppliers and buyers because it ties the insert reference to the hole preparation, installation tool, inspection checks, and repair approach.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 4619:2010?

  • EN 4620 - The design standard for the insert family; it is the main companion document for choosing the insert and judging whether repair is possible.
  • EN 4622 - A material and coating variant of the self-broaching-key insert in heat resisting steel.
  • EN 4623 - A material and coating variant of the self-broaching-key insert in heat resisting nickel base alloy.
  • EN 4624 - Another material and coating variant of the self-broaching-key insert in heat resisting nickel base alloy.
  • ISO 5855-1 - Gives the general requirements for MJ threads.
  • ISO 5855-2 - Gives the limit dimensions for bolts and nuts used with MJ threads.

What does the SIST EN 4619:2010 document contain?

The document contains the installation and removal procedures, the pre-installation inspection steps, and the tool guidance for both hand and air-pressure installation. It also includes cross-reference tables for insert references, repair sizes, and tapped hole sizes, plus the special dimensions for MJS13×1.

It provides figures for the installation tools, the position checks, and the removal sequence. It also includes a torque-check table and a removal table that support inspection, assembly control, and repair work.
