ii)   vertical soft body impact;
b)   studs for walling application for which type testing involves:
1)   pendular soft body impact.
Annex A (normative) lists modifications to EN 1195, particularly the contact area of the loading head that may be used for concentrated loading.
Annex B (informative) provides proposals for national performance requirements.
Annex C (informative) provides examples for a decking application in a floor and a roof.

SIST EN 12871:2013 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 12871:2013 from CEN. It specifies type-testing methods for wood-based panels used as load bearing panels in floors, roofs and walls, focusing on concentrated load performance for decking and soft body impact classification. It is intended for manufacturers, test laboratories, designers and specifiers who need evidence that a panel suits a particular structural end use.

What does SIST EN 12871:2013 specify?

SIST EN 12871:2013 covers the performance characteristics of load bearing wood-based panels through type testing. It applies to structural floor and roof decking on joists and to structural wall sheathing on studs, and it organizes the work into general requirements, test methods, evaluation and reporting.

It does not cover racking testing or uniformly distributed loads. Those are handled by EN 594 and by calculation according to EN 1995-1-1.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ANormative modifications to EN 1195 for concentrated load testing, including the loading head contact area
Annex BInformative proposals for national performance requirements
Annex CInformative example for a floor and roof decking application

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 12871:2013?

SIST EN 12871:2013 is built around type testing of the weakest part of a panel assembly, followed by statistical evaluation of the results. In practice, the standard tells a test house what to sample, where to test, which test method to use, and what to report.

General requirements and sampling

  • Clause 5.3 requires initial type testing (ITT) samples to come from at least 3 production runs over at least 3 weeks. This matters because the test result must represent normal production, not a single good panel.
  • Clause 6.2.1 and 6.3.1 require the weakest point to be identified before testing, and all later tests to be carried out there. That means the critical location, not an average location, governs the result.
  • Clause 6.1 gives practical checks on panel geometry, including length and width tolerances, thickness, linear expansion, joint unevenness and tongue-and-groove consistency with the ITT specimen.

Concentrated load on floors and roofs

  • Clause 6.2.2 and 6.2.4 require concentrated load testing for floor and roof decking according to EN 1195, with the Annex A modification. The test must provide stiffness, serviceability load and maximum load values.
  • Clause 6.2.3 treats the serviceability limit state (SLS) as the point where the load-deflection curve shows irreversible damage, even if damage is not visible. If a load-deflection graph is unavailable, Fser,k is derived from Fmax,k using the relationship given in the clause.
  • Clause 6.2.5 classifies impact performance for floors and roofs by Impact Class I or II. For floor and roof decking, impact testing is only carried out when joist spacing exceeds 300 mm.

Soft body impact for walls and reporting

  • Clause 6.3.2 requires wall sheathing impact testing according to EN 596 and classifies the result as Impact Class III. The result applies only to walls built to the same construction specification as the tested sample.
  • Clause 7 evaluates concentrated-load results using EN 1058 statistical methods, and Clause 8 requires the report to state panel type, thickness, tongue-and-groove details, test reports, Fser,k, Fmax,k, Rmean, impact class and compliance with the standard.
  • Annex A fixes the load pad for concentrated loading at a square 50 mm x 50 mm, which helps make results comparable between test houses and aligned with EN 1991-1-1 loading area assumptions.

What terms does SIST EN 12871:2013 define?

  • service class 1 - moisture condition for timber structures in which the surrounding air exceeds 65 % relative humidity only for a few weeks per year.
  • service class 2 - moisture condition in which the surrounding air exceeds 85 % relative humidity only for a few weeks per year.
  • service class 3 - conditions with higher moisture contents than service class 2.
  • serviceability limit states (SLS) - states beyond which specified service requirements are no longer met.
  • ultimate limit states (ULS) - states associated with collapse or similar structural failure.
  • load category - the imposed-load class defined for decking applications in EN 1991-1-1.
  • structural floor-decking - a horizontal or quasi-horizontal wood-based panel assembly fixed to joists and spanning over them.
  • punching shear strength - the stress in the panel section under a concentrated load applied through a defined loading head.

Who uses SIST EN 12871:2013?

SIST EN 12871:2013 is used by panel manufacturers, testing laboratories, structural designers, certification bodies and quality managers. They use it to type-test panel products, classify soft body impact performance, compare test results with load categories, and document whether a panel can be used in a specific floor, roof or wall build-up. Buyers and specifiers use the report to compare panels on a common test basis.

What changed in SIST EN 12871:2013 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 12871:2013 supersedes EN 12871:2010. Compared with the previous edition, the foreword states these changes:

  • the title was changed to reflect that the document now deals only with determining performance characteristics;
  • Annex B now gives proposals for national performance requirements and includes a new reduction factor for ULS;
  • three impact classes were defined for soft body impact, with links to load categories in Annex B;
  • racking behaviour and uniformly distributed loads were removed from the scope because they are covered elsewhere;
  • Annex B includes the possibility of increasing span as a function of roof slope;
  • the statistical evaluation reference changed to EN 1058;
  • the load pad for point load testing is now 50 mm x 50 mm in all cases.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 12871:2013?

StandardWhat it contributes
EN 1195Floor and roof decking concentrated-load test method, used with Annex A

EN 1990Basis of structural design, including action factors and combination rules
EN 1991-1-1Imposed loads and load categories for floors and roofs
EN 1995-1-1Timber design rules, including kmod, kdef and material factors

What does the SIST EN 12871:2013 document contain?

SIST EN 12871:2013 contains tables for panel product suitability, test-point sampling, impact classification and report content, plus a normative Annex A for the EN 1195 modification. It also includes Annex B with equations and recommended performance requirements for concentrated load and soft body impact, and Annex C with a worked example for a floor and roof decking case.

The document gives the test setup used for floor, roof and wall applications, the sequence of impact testing, the calculation framework for stiffness and characteristic values, and the content expected in a test report. In practice, it is a test and evaluation document, not a general design code.
