Overview
SIST EN 301 240 V1.1.3:2003 defines a standard interworking profile for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) systems, focusing on Data Services Profile (DSP) conformant equipment. The standard enables non-voice devices with roaming mobility to interoperate via DECT for packet-based Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) transmissions. This capability supports dial-up internet access and general multi-protocol datagram transport, facilitating secure and efficient remote LAN access through DECT infrastructure. The standard ensures compatibility and interoperability across various network types, aligning with European and international best practices for telecommunications.
Key Topics
- DECT Data Services Profile (DSP): Defines roles for non-voice data services within DECT networks.
- PPP Interworking: Specifies methods for seamless Point-to-Point Protocol data transfer over DECT.
- Mobility Support: Targets mobility class 2, enabling both private and public roaming for non-voice terminals.
- Multi-Protocol Datagram Transport: Supports transfer of data beyond PPP, including other protocol types.
- Layered Architecture: Addresses requirements for Physical (PHL), Medium Access Control (MAC), Data Link Control (DLC), and Network (NWK) layers.
- Interworking Unit (IWU): Facilitates interconnection between DECT systems and varying fixed networks (such as X.25, Frame Relay, ATM, ISDN, or modem-based networks).
- Management Entity (ME): Provides management control, including link resource management and call handling.
- User and Control Signaling: Standardizes signaling procedures to ensure reliable communication between portable parts (PPs) and fixed parts (FPs).
Applications
SIST EN 301 240 V1.1.3:2003 provides practical value in diverse telecommunications environments where packet-based data access is required over wireless DECT connections:
- Wireless Dial-Up Internet Access: Enables mobile terminals to establish dial-up PPP sessions to internet service providers, replacing wired modems with flexible DECT connections.
- Remote LAN Access: Supports secure, transparent access to corporate networks from remote locations using DECT portable devices.
- Multi-Network Interworking: Facilitates integration with various fixed networks (PSTN, ISDN, X.25, ATM, Frame Relay) through adaptable interworking procedures.
- Business Telephony Applications: Empowers enterprises to offer data services such as email, intranet access, and secure file transfer on mobile DECT handsets or specialized terminals.
- Public Hotspot Services: Supports service providers in delivering wireless data connectivity in public areas (hotels, airports, conference centers) via PPP over DECT.

ETSIEN 301 240 V1.1.3 (1998-06)51ScopeThe present document defines a profile for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) systemsconforming to EN 300 175, parts 1 to 7 [1] to [7]. It is part of a family of profiles that build upon and extend each other, aimed at the general connection of terminals supporting non-voice services to a fixed infra-structure, private and public. The present document is intended for use in roaming applications and so specifies mobility class 2. It thus specifies therequirements on the Network (NWK) layer Call Control (CC) and Mobility Management (MM) entities, to provide fullpublic services. The present document builds upon services offered by the data service profiles as defined in ETS 300 701 [9] andETS 300 651 [8]. It specifies an interworking profile for non-voice equipment with roaming mobility, providingPoint-to-Point Protocol (PPP) transmission to allow dial-up internet access and general multi-protocol datagramtransport. PPP packet transfers on the DECT air interface are specified via a high efficient DECT packet transmissionprotocol. However, interworking to the fixed network may be via a number of interface protocols, including X.25, framerelay, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and traditional circuit switched voice band modem and Integrated ServicesDigital Network (ISDN) connection. The present document defines the specific requirements on the Physical (PHL), Medium Access Control (MAC), dataLink Control (DLC) and NWK layers of DECT. The standard also specifies Management Entity (ME) requirements andgeneric interworking conventions which ensure the efficient use of the DECT spectrum.2Normative referencesReferences may be made to:a)specific versions of publications (identified by date of publication, edition number, version number, etc.), inwhich case, subsequent revisions to the referenced document do not apply; orb)all versions up to and including the identified version (identified by "up to and including" before the versionidentity); orc)all versions subsequent to and including the identified version (identified by "onwards" following the versionidentity); ord)publications without mention of a specific version, in which case the latest version applies.A non-specific reference to an ETS shall also be taken to refer to later versions published as an EN with the samenumber.[1]EN 300 175-1: "Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT); Common Interface (CI);Part 1: Overview".[2]EN 300 175-2: "Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT); Common Interface (CI);Part 2: Physical layer (PHL)".[3]EN 300 175-3: "Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT); Common Interface (CI);Part 3: Medium Access Control (MAC) layer".[4]EN 300 175-4: "Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT); Common Interface (CI);Part 4: Data Link Control (DLC) layer".[5]EN 300 175-5: "Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT); Common Interface (CI);Part 5: Network (NWK) layer".[6]EN 300 175-6: "Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT); Common Interface (CI);Part 6: Identities and addressing".[7]EN 300 175-7: "Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT); Common Interface (CI);Part 7: Security features".SIST EN 301 240 V1.1.3:2003
