General Information
Overview
EN IEC 63522-22:2025 - Electrical relays - Tests and measurements - Part 22: Limiting continuous current - is the European adoption of IEC 63522-22:2025 prepared by TC 94 (Electrical relays). This standard defines a reproducible test method to evaluate the maximum continuous current that relay contacts can carry under specified conditions. It is intended to assess relay contact suitability during transportation, storage and normal operational use, and is read in conjunction with IEC 63522-0 (general guidance).
Key topics and requirements
- Purpose: Determine the limiting continuous current - the greatest current a closed contact can carry continuously under defined conditions.
- Test setup: Terminals and connections per IEC 63522-10 Annex A; coil energized at rated voltage (operate condition) or not energized for release/bistable tests.
- Loading procedure: Apply manufacturer-specified current to the contacts until thermal equilibrium is reached; allow cooling to ambient; then run ten operating cycles with rated coil voltage while monitoring contact opening/closing.
- Conditions to specify: energization value, limiting continuous current for normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) contacts, and mounting situation.
- Evaluation criteria: No malfunction during the final 10 functional cycles. Electrical parameters must meet limits verified by complementary tests:
- Contact-circuit resistance (IEC 63522-6)
- Functional tests (IEC 63522-7)
- Dielectric strength (IEC 63522-4)
- Timing (IEC 63522-8)
- Reporting: Test report must allow reproducibility and include DUT description, method, deviations, ambient conditions, voltages/currents, number of cycles, duty cycle, energization values, limiting currents, mounting, and other observations.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it: relay manufacturers, component test laboratories, OEMs (control systems, power distribution, automotive suppliers), R&D and quality assurance engineers, procurement and compliance teams, and certification bodies.
- Why it’s useful: Establishes a standardized approach to verify contact heating behavior and long‑term carrying capability, supporting design validation, product specifications, end‑user safety margins, and compliance testing.
- Typical use cases: specifying contact current ratings for product datasheets, validating relay selection in power control and switching applications, and documenting test evidence for product qualification and customer acceptance.
