SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 is the Slovenian adoption of EN ISO 7786:2001 and ISO 7786:2001 for dental rotary instruments. It specifies the material, dimensions, shape families, test methods, sampling level, marking, labelling and packaging guidance for laboratory abrasive instruments used for grinding in the dental laboratory.
What does SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 specify?
SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 specifies requirements for the six most commonly available shapes of ceramic bonded abrasive instruments used in dental laboratory grinding. It is a product standard for manufacturers, test laboratories, purchasers and quality staff who need a common basis for checking form, size and identification.
The document is organized into clauses for scope, normative references, symbols, requirements, test procedures, sampling and acceptance quality level (AQL), manufacturer’s instructions, marking, labelling and packaging. Annex ZA gives the European publications that correspond to the normative references.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 7786:2002?
SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 focuses on the working part material, the permitted shapes and dimensions, the allowed run-out, and the information that must accompany the product. In practice, these requirements help a manufacturer build a consistent instrument and help a buyer or inspector check whether a batch matches the standard.
Materials, shapes and dimensions
- Clause 4.1 requires the working part to be made of abrasive materials, while the choice and treatment of that abrasive material are left to the manufacturer. This matters because the standard controls the functional form of the instrument without prescribing one specific abrasive recipe.
- Clause 4.1 also requires the shank material to comply with ISO 1797-1, and Clause 4.3 states that the shank shall be Type 2 in accordance with ISO 1797-1. This gives the user a defined connection interface and supports interchangeability.
- Clause 4.2 limits the product to the shapes shown in Figures 1 to 10, with permitted variations only within the stated dimensions and descriptions. In practice, suppliers can offer the listed form families, but not arbitrary shapes.
- Clause 4.3 states that dimensions are given in millimetres and angles in degrees, and that the working part and overall length shall match the relevant figures and tables. That tells designers and inspectors exactly which measurements to check.
Shape families and dimensional control
- Clause 4.4 groups the instruments into shape families: spherical, inverted truncated conical, inverted conical, cylindrical, knife-edge and truncated conical. This grouping matters because shape determines how the instrument is used in the dental laboratory.
- The clause then divides some families into subtypes such as short, standard, regular and long. For a buyer, that means the designation on the product must match the intended geometry, not just the general family name.
- The tables associated with Clause 4.4 provide the nominal sizes and permitted proportions for each shape. Manufacturers use those tables to design and label the product, and inspectors use them to verify size.
Run-out and test methods
- Clause 4.5 sets a maximum run-out of 0,3 mm. Run-out is a practical check on rotational accuracy, so this limit helps control vibration and consistency in use.
- Clause 5.1 says shape is determined with a shadowgraph or by measuring the relevant dimensions in accordance with ISO 8325. This gives a clear inspection method instead of relying only on visual judgement.
- Clause 5.2 requires dimensions to be measured in accordance with ISO 8325, and Clause 5.3 requires run-out to be determined in accordance with ISO 8325. The measurement point is the largest diameter, or the middle of the working part for the cylindrical form.
Sampling, instructions and product information
- Clause 6 sets the AQL at 6,5 in accordance with ISO 2859-1. In practice, that tells quality teams how to plan lot-by-lot inspection for acceptance.
- Clause 7 requires the manufacturer to provide information on maximum rotational speed. This is important for safe use because the user needs a speed limit before putting the instrument into service.
- Clause 8 allows marking on the abrasive instrument to contain information on the abrasive material. That helps traceability and identification when tools are separated from their packaging.
Labelling and packaging
- Clause 9 requires package labelling to include the manufacturer or distributor name or trade mark, the abrasive material, the shank type, the shape number, specific characteristics, the nominal diameter or nominal size, and the lot number. This is the main identification data set for purchasing, traceability and stock control.
- Clause 9 also says the information should preferably follow the appropriate part of ISO 6360. That links the product description to a common dental rotary instrument coding system.
- Clause 10 leaves packaging to the manufacturer’s discretion. The standard therefore controls the identification and technical description more than the outer pack format.
What terms does SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 define?
SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 uses a small set of core terms and symbols that matter for inspection and labelling.
- Working part - The abrasive portion of the instrument that does the grinding work.
- Shank - The part that fits into the holder or machine, and whose material and type are tied to ISO 1797-1.
- Run-out - The rotational deviation measured on the instrument, limited here to 0,3 mm.
- Acceptance quality level (AQL) - The quality level used for sampling and lot acceptance under ISO 2859-1.
- Nominal diameter / nominal size - The designated size used in the tables and on the label to identify the product family.
- Shape number - The coded shape identifier used with ISO 6360-2 on labelling.
- Specific characteristics - Additional coded information used to describe the instrument beyond shape and size.
- Symbols d, l and α - Clause 3 uses symbols for the working-part diameter, lengths and the working-part angle so the dimensional tables can be read consistently.
Who uses SIST EN ISO 7786:2002?
SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 is used by manufacturers of dental rotary instruments, especially suppliers of laboratory abrasive instruments, because it defines the product geometry, shank type and required product information. It is also used by quality control teams and test laboratories that measure shape, dimensions and run-out against the specified methods.
Dental laboratories and their purchasers use it to compare products and check that the correct shape, size and speed information are supplied. Distributors and compliance staff use it for labelling, traceability and lot acceptance.
What changed in SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 from the previous edition?
SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 is the third edition of ISO 7786 and it cancels and replaces ISO 7786:1990. The foreword states these technical changes: a spherical shape was added, nominal size 031 was added for the truncated conical form, and new requirements were added for manufacturer’s instructions, marking and labelling.
The European adoption also supersedes EN 27786:1991, and the Slovenian standard replaces SIST EN 27786:2000.
Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 7786:2002?
SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 cites these standards in its normative references and related material:
| Standard | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| ISO 1797-1 | Requirements for metal shanks, including the Type 2 shank used here |
| ISO 2859-1 | Sampling procedures by attributes and the AQL basis for lot inspection |
| ISO 6360-2 | Shape and specific characteristics coding for dental rotary instruments |
| ISO 8325 | Test methods used for shape, dimensions and run-out |
| ISO 2157 | Nominal diameters referenced in the introduction |
| ISO 6360-1 | General characteristics of the dental rotary instrument numbering system |
Annex ZA maps the normative references to the relevant European publications.
What does the SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 document contain?
SIST EN ISO 7786:2002 contains Figures 1 to 10 and Tables 1 to 10 that set out the six shape families and their nominal sizes and proportions. It also contains the test procedures in Clause 5 for checking shape, dimensions and run-out, including the use of a shadowgraph or ISO 8325 measurement methods.
Clause 6 gives the AQL for lot inspection, while Clauses 7 to 10 cover the information the manufacturer must provide, the permitted marking on the instrument, the required labelling on the package and the packaging approach. Annex ZA provides the European publication references for the standards cited in the body of the text.
