Overview

SIST EN ISO 8752:2012 specifies the characteristics of slotted spring-type straight pins, heavy duty, made of steel or austenitic/martensitic stainless steel. These pins have nominal diameters ranging from 1 mm to 50 mm inclusive. The standard establishes dimensional requirements, material specifications, mechanical properties, and testing methods to ensure consistent quality and reliable performance in fastening applications.

Prepared by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 2 and endorsed by CEN as a European Standard, SIST EN ISO 8752:2012 supersedes the 1997 edition. It is internationally recognized and implemented across many European member countries.

Key Topics

  • Material Types: Specifies use of plain carbon steel, silicon manganese steel, austenitic and martensitic stainless steels with detailed chemical composition and hardness requirements.
  • Dimensions and Tolerances: Covers pin diameters from 1 mm to 50 mm, with detailed dimensional tables ensuring pins fit holes with H12 tolerance class to maintain secure fastening.
  • Slot Design: Defines the slot configuration as slotted heavy duty with allowance for non-interlocking types by special agreement. Slot width and form are controlled to prevent full slot closure when mounted.
  • Surface Finish: Pins are supplied with a natural, plain finish and lubricated as standard. If plating or coating is required, processes must avoid hydrogen embrittlement, per guidance from ISO 4042.
  • Mechanical Properties: Includes minimum Vickers hardness values (420 HV to 560 HV depending on material) and shear strength requirements tested in compliance with ISO 8749.
  • Quality Assurance: Workmanship criteria mandate burr-free pins without defects, inspected according to ISO 3269 acceptance procedures.
  • Designation System: Clear format to identify pin type, diameter, length, slot type, and material (e.g., Spring pin ISO 8752-6 × 30-St).

Applications

SIST EN ISO 8752:2012 spring-type straight pins are widely used in:

  • Mechanical fastening solutions where reliable, heavy-duty pin retention is needed.
  • Automotive and machinery assembly for securing components subjected to shear loads.
  • Aerospace and industrial equipment manufacturing requiring precision fasteners with controlled mechanical properties.
  • Engineering applications where pins must precisely fit into holes with specific tolerance classes to ensure stability.
  • Situations demanding corrosion resistance, achieved through selection of austenitic or martensitic stainless steel variants.

By adhering to this standard, manufacturers and users ensure compatibility and interchangeability of spring pins, contributing to safer and more efficient mechanical designs.

Related Standards

  • ISO 13337 - Spring-type straight pins, slotted, light duty: Complements EN ISO 8752 by specifying lighter duty pins enabling combination and fitting compatibility.
  • ISO 3269 - Fasteners - Acceptance inspection: Defines inspection protocols applicable to spring pins under EN ISO 8752.
  • ISO 4042 - Fasteners - Electroplated coatings: Provides guidance on surface treatments related to hydrogen embrittlement prevention.
  • ISO 6507-1 - Metallic materials - Vickers hardness test: Essential for verifying hardness of pins as stipulated by EN ISO 8752.
  • ISO 8749 - Pins and grooved pins - Shear test: Specifies the method for mechanical shear strength testing of spring pins.

Standard SIST EN ISO 8752:2012 ensures that slotted spring-type straight pins meet robust mechanical and material requirements, facilitating reliable fastening solutions across diverse engineering sectors. Compliance with EN ISO 8752 enhances quality control, product safety, and international trade in fasteners.

ISO 8752:2009(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8752 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners, Subcommittee SC 10, Product
standards for fasteners.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 8752:1997), which has been technically
revised.
