Overview
EN 772-6:2001 specifies a standardized test method for determining the bending tensile strength (flexural strength) of thin aggregate concrete masonry units. It applies to units with a width < 100 mm and a length-to-width ratio > 10, and is intended to be used in conjunction with product requirements in prEN 771-3. The method uses a flexural test with roller supports and records the failure load and position of fracture to calculate bending tensile strength in N/mm².
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Aggregate concrete masonry units (dense and lightweight aggregates) meeting the geometric limits in the scope.
- Specimen conditioning: Whole-unit specimens are air-dried before testing (conditioning environment and duration specified in the standard) and judged air-dry when mass loss between consecutive weighings (≥ 24 h apart) is < 1%.
- Test apparatus:
- Test machine per EN 1015-11.
- Two support rollers and two upper loading rollers (roller diameters typically between 15 and 40 mm). Span between supports is related to specimen height.
- Most rollers should be able to oscillate slightly to ensure uniform force distribution.
- Weighing instrument accurate to at least 0.1% of specimen mass.
- Test procedure:
- Apply load at the two upper rollers positioned at third points of the span.
- Load at a rate producing failure within 30–90 seconds.
- Record maximum (failure) load and fracture position; measure cross‑section dimensions at fracture to 0.1 mm.
- Calculation and reporting:
- Bending tensile strength is calculated from the failure load and specimen dimensions and expressed to the nearest 0.1 N/mm². Results outside the middle third of the span are discarded.
- Test report must include sample details, specimen orientation, individual and mean strengths, any discarded results, and references to relevant standards.
Applications and users
- Who uses EN 772-6:
- Test laboratories performing product conformity and quality control testing.
- Masonry unit manufacturers validating product performance and compliance with prEN 771-3.
- Certification bodies and regulatory authorities assessing masonry product durability and safety.
- Designers and structural engineers needing validated flexural strength data for thin masonry elements.
- Practical use:
- Quality control during production of thin aggregate concrete blocks and tiles.
- Characterising flexural behavior for structural or non-structural design decisions.
- Supporting product declarations and conformity assessment for European markets.
