General Information

Abstract

The present document gives an introduction and overview of the complete Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) Common Interface (CI). The present document of the DECT CI specifies the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. The MAC layer is part 3 of the DECT Common Interface standard and layer 2a of the DECT protocol stack.
It specifies three groups of MAC services:
• the broadcast message control service;
• the connectionless message control service; and
• the multi-bearer control service.
It also specifies the logical channels that are used by the above mentioned services, and how they are multiplexed and mapped into the Service Data Units (SDUs) that are exchanged with the Physical Layer (PHL).

Overview

SIST EN 300 175-3 V1.9.1:2006 is a standard published by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), harmonized with ETSI EN 300 175-3. This document defines the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer as part of the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) Common Interface (CI). The MAC layer acts as layer 2a within the DECT protocol stack and is fundamental for enabling efficient and reliable communication over the DECT radio interface.

The standard provides specifications for three main MAC service groups:

  • Broadcast Message Control
  • Connectionless Message Control
  • Multi-Bearer Control

It details the logical channels these services use, the multiplexing methods involved, and the mapping of these channels to Service Data Units exchanged with the Physical Layer. This enables DECT devices to operate efficiently in dynamic radio environments.

Key Topics

1. Structure and Reference Model

  • Defines the MAC layer reference model within the DECT CI.
  • Describes the relationship between the MAC layer and the physical layer.

2. MAC Layer Services

  • Broadcast Message Control (BMC): Handles system-wide information broadcasting to all terminals.
  • Connectionless Message Control (CMC): Supports the exchange of individual messages without establishing a persistent connection.
  • Multi-Bearer Control (MBC): Facilitates the setup and management of multiple simultaneous communication bearers.

3. Logical Channels and Multiplexing

  • Specifies the logical channels (C-plane, U-plane, control channels) and their mapping.
  • Explains how multiple services can share radio resources through time and bit multiplexing.

4. State Definitions and Bearer Types

  • Outlines the operating states for DECT equipment such as Portable Parts (PP) and Radio Fixed Parts (RFP).
  • Defines various bearer types (basic, advanced, symmetric, asymmetric) for supporting versatile services.

5. MAC Layer Messaging

  • Details the structure of MAC-layer messages, including headers and information fields.
  • Covers system information, paging, connection control, encryption, and error control mechanisms.

Applications

The Medium Access Control layer as specified in SIST EN 300 175-3 V1.9.1:2006 is central to the operation of all DECT-based cordless communication systems. Key applications include:

  • Cordless Telephony Systems: Ensures efficient channel access and communication between handsets and base stations.
  • Wireless Office Solutions: Supports high-capacity, multi-user voice and data communication in business environments.
  • Integrated Wireless Systems: Facilitates interoperability and enhanced performance for use in residential, industrial, and public access DECT deployments.
  • Telecommunications Infrastructure: Forms part of the backbone protocol stack for fixed-wireless access and wireless local loop services.

Adherence to this standard ensures compatibility, operational efficiency, and quality of service in all systems utilizing the DECT Common Interface.

Related Standards

For holistic DECT system implementation, SIST EN 300 175-3 V1.9.1:2006 should be considered alongside other key standards:

  • SIST EN 300 175-1: Overview and Technical Requirements
  • SIST EN 300 175-2: Physical Layer (PHL)
  • SIST EN 300 175-4: Data Link Control Layer (DLC)
  • SIST EN 300 175-5+: Higher Layer Specifications

These documents collectively define the DECT Common Interface from radio physical characteristics to application-level protocols, ensuring interworking across multiple manufacturers and environments.

Keywords: DECT, Common Interface, Medium Access Control, MAC Layer, wireless communications, cordless telephony, logical channels, multiplexing, broadcast services, connectionless messaging, multi-bearer control, standard, SIST, ETSI.
