Overview
EN ISO 7784-2:2023 - "Paints and varnishes - Determination of resistance to abrasion - Part 2: Method with abrasive rubber wheels and rotating test specimen" - specifies a standardized laboratory method to measure the abrasion resistance of coatings. The test uses two loaded, freely rotatable, eccentrically mounted abrasive rubber wheels pressed onto a rotating test specimen (turntable). Abrasive wear is assessed by measuring the loss of coating mass after a defined number of cycles. This is the 2023 (third) edition and supersedes EN ISO 7784-2:2016.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Two abrasive rubber wheels on pivoting arms contact a rotating specimen to produce a ring-shaped wear zone; mass loss after the agreed cycles is measured.
- Apparatus: Turntable abrasion tester with pivoting arms and mandrels using ball bearings; wheels mounted on mandrels and, if required, loaded by weights.
- Critical dimensions & settings (as given in the standard):
- Turntable speed: (60 ± 2) min⁻¹.
- Wheel offset (eccentricity): (19.05 ± 0.3) mm.
- Abrasive wheel axial bore: (16.0 ± 0.1) mm.
- Wear zone width: about 13 mm.
- Dust extraction: suction device positioned (3 ± 1) mm from the specimen.
- Specimen preparation & conditioning: Film thickness measurement and conditioning requirements reference ISO 2808 and ISO 3270; film thickness and substrate preparation are specified.
- Abrasive media: Rubber discs containing abrasive granulate; reference to FEPA Standard 43-1 for abrasive grain grades.
- Procedure & evaluation: Number of cycles is pre-set; test records mass loss (abrasive wear) and includes precision and reporting requirements.
Applications and users
This method is used where quantifiable, repeatable abrasion resistance data are required to:
- Support quality control in coating manufacturers and formulation development.
- Compare performance for industrial, automotive, marine, protective, and architectural coatings.
- Provide data for material specifications, procurement, and compliance testing. Primary users: materials testing laboratories, R&D teams, QC engineers, standards writers, and product certifiers seeking reliable coating durability testing.
Related standards
- ISO 7784 series: Part 1 (abrasive paper on rubber wheel - rotating) and Part 3 (abrasive paper on metal wheel - reciprocating).
- Normative references cited: ISO 1514, ISO 2808, ISO 3270, ISO 4618, ISO 48-4/48-5, and FEPA Standard 43-1.
This standard provides a reproducible abrasion test method - essential for consistent evaluation of coating durability and comparative performance data.

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
