(Main)Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) - Specification for Service Information (SI) in DVB systems
- Abstract
The present document specifies the Service Information (SI) data which forms a part of Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) bitstreams, in order that the user can be provided with information to assist in selection of services and/or events within the bitstream, and so that the Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD) can automatically configure itself for the selected service. SI data for automatic configuration is mostly specified within ISO/IEC 13818-1 [1] as Program Specific Information (PSI). The present document specifies additional data which complements the PSI by providing data to aid automatic tuning of IRDs, and additional information intended for display to the user. The manner of presentation of the information is not specified in the present document, and IRD manufacturers have freedom to choose appropriate presentation methods. It is expected that Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) will be a feature of Digital TeleVision (TV) transmissions. The definition of an EPG is outside the scope of the present document (i.e. the SI specification), but the data contained within the SI specified in the present document may be used as the basis for an EPG. Rules of operation for the implementation of the present document are specified in ETSI TS 101 211 [i.1].

ETSI EN 300 468 V1.20.1 (2026-09) - Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB); Specification for Service Information (SI) in DVB systems
SIST EN 300 468 V1.20.1:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 300 468 V1.20.1 (2026-09). It specifies Service Information (SI) for Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) systems - the signalling that helps receivers select services and events, tune automatically, and present service metadata. The document is written for DVB implementers who need interoperable signalling beyond the base Program Specific Information (PSI) in ISO/IEC 13818-1.
What does SIST EN 300 468 V1.20.1:2026 specify?
SIST EN 300 468 V1.20.1:2026 specifies the SI data carried in DVB bitstreams. It adds service-selection and user-information data to PSI, while leaving the presentation method to the IRD manufacturer.
The scope states that SI supports automatic tuning of Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD) equipment and user-facing information. It also notes that Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) definitions are outside the scope, although SI data may be used as the basis for an EPG. Implementation rules are given in ETSI TS 101 211.
The document is organized around:
- clause 4, which describes SI
- clause 5, which defines SI tables and their transport
- clause 6, which defines descriptors
- clause 7, which gives Storage Media Interoperability (SMI) measures
- annexes that add character handling, audio signalling, codec-specific signalling, and service_type assignments
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| A | Character tables and control-code handling |
| D | AC-3, Enhanced AC-3, and AC-4 signalling |
| F | ISO 639 language descriptor for the "original audio" soundtrack |
| G | DTS, DTS-HD, and DTS-UHD signalling in DVB |
| H | AAC coded audio signalling |
| I | service_type assignments, including digital television, H.264/AVC, HEVC, VVC, and AVS3 |
| J | Supplementary audio signalling for receiver-mix and broadcast-mix cases |
| L | DTS Neural descriptor |
| M | Audio preselection and mapping of codec-specific values |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 468 V1.20.1:2026?
Core SI transport
SIST EN 300 468 V1.20.1:2026 defines how SI is carried in DVB transport streams, starting with the section mechanism in clause 5.1. It specifies mapping into transport stream packets, coding of PID and table_id fields, repetition rates, random access rules, scrambling, and bit order. In practice, this is what makes SI readable by receivers after tuning and during stream changes.
- Clause 5.1.2 and 5.1.3 define how sections are mapped and identified. That matters because the receiver must find the right table quickly and unambiguously.
- Clause 5.1.4 sets repetition and random-access behaviour for DVB PSI and SI, and for Satellite Access Tables. That matters because service data must remain available often enough for receivers to lock on and recover.
- Clause 5.1.6 defines bit order and transmission order. That matters because the byte and bit layout must match exactly between transmitters and receivers.
Service and event tables
SIST EN 300 468 V1.20.1:2026 defines the principal SI tables in clause 5.2. These include the Network Information Table (NIT), Bouquet Association Table (BAT), Service Description Table (SDT), Event Information Table (EIT), Time and Date Table (TDT), Time Offset Table, Running Status Table, Stuffing Table, Discontinuity Information Table, Selection Information Table, and Satellite Access Tables.
These tables divide the signalling by purpose. NIT and BAT identify the network or bouquet, SDT describes services, EIT carries event timing and descriptors, TDT gives current UTC time, and the time-offset signalling supports local time handling. For operators, this is the core data set used for channel lists, event guides, scheduling, and time-related service behaviour.
The Satellite Access Tables are expanded with Satellite Position v2, Cell Fragment, Time Association, Beamhopping Time Plan, and Satellite Position v3 information. That makes the document relevant not only to generic DVB services but also to satellite-specific network planning and time-linked signalling.
Descriptors and metadata
SIST EN 300 468 V1.20.1:2026 uses descriptors in clause 6 to attach metadata to tables and streams. The document defines descriptor identification, location, and scoping rules, then provides descriptors for service names, component identification, content classification, country availability, delivery systems, linkage, multilingual naming, local time offsets, subtitles, teletext, service moves, target regions, icons, URIs, and prominence.
This matters in practice because the receiver uses descriptors to build channel lists, show programme information, choose audio and subtitle options, and follow service changes. The descriptors also carry technical delivery data such as cable, satellite, terrestrial, DVB-C2, DVB-T2, DVB-S2, S2X, SH, and C2-related signalling.
Audio, video, and storage-media signalling
SIST EN 300 468 V1.20.1:2026 extends SI for modern audio and video service types. Annex D covers AC-3, Enhanced AC-3, and AC-4. Annex G covers DTS, DTS-HD, and DTS-UHD. Annex H covers AAC. Annex I assigns and illustrates service_type values for digital television, H.264/AVC, HEVC, VVC, and AVS3 services, including profile-oriented signalling examples.
These annexes matter because receivers need codec-specific descriptors to know how to decode and present the stream. Annex J then defines signalling for supplementary audio so that receivers can present the correct main, dependent, or mixed audio. Annex M maps codec-specific values to the audio preselection descriptor, which helps receivers expose the right audio choices to the user.
Clause 7 adds SMI measures for stored content, including the Discontinuity Information Table, the Selection Information Table, and the Partial transport stream descriptor. That is useful when DVB content is replayed from storage and the receiver still has to interpret service changes and stream selection correctly.
What terms does SIST EN 300 468 V1.20.1:2026 define?
- Service Information (SI) - the DVB signalling that carries service, event, and receiver-assistance data in the bitstream.
- Program Specific Information (PSI) - the MPEG-derived base signalling in ISO/IEC 13818-1 that SI complements.
- Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD) - the receiver that automatically configures itself for the selected DVB service.
- Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) - a user-facing programme guide that may be built from SI data.
- delivery system - the physical medium carrying one or more DVB transport streams, such as satellite, cable, fibre, or terrestrial.
- original_network_id - the unique identifier of a broadcast platform operator.
- transport_stream_id - the unique identifier of a DVB transport stream within an original network.
- NVOD - near video on demand, used in the NVOD reference, time-shifted event, and time-shifted service signalling.
Who uses SIST EN 300 468 V1.20.1:2026?
SIST EN 300 468 V1.20.1:2026 is used by DVB broadcasters, multiplex operators, platform engineers, and receiver manufacturers. It is also used by teams designing EPG functions, multilingual service metadata, accessibility features, and codec signalling for modern TV services.
Typical tasks include:
- signalling service names, service lists, and event data
- defining tuning and network-identification data
- labelling audio, subtitle, teletext, and component streams
- handling service moves, relocations, and regional availability
- supporting UHD, HDR, multi-audio, and storage-media playback
