Overview
SIST EN 60168:1997/A2:2002 is a European standard specifying the testing requirements for indoor and outdoor post insulators made from ceramic material or glass. These insulators are designed for electrical systems with nominal voltages greater than 1 kV. The standard ensures the reliable performance and safety of insulators used in high-voltage power systems, addressing material quality and durability under various environmental conditions.
This standard is an amendment (A2) to the original EN 60168:1994 and was officially approved by CENELEC in November 2000. It aligns with the International Electrotechnical Commission’s amendment IEC 60168:1994/A2:2000 and represents an important update for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies involved in high-voltage insulator quality control.
Key Topics
- Scope and Application: Testing indoor and outdoor post insulators for systems above 1 kV nominal voltages.
- Materials Covered: Ceramic insulators and glass insulators used in electrical substations and outdoor power lines.
- Test Methods:
- Porosity testing for ceramic post insulators using a standardized dye-immersion procedure.
- Mechanical, electrical, and environmental tests to verify insulator performance and integrity.
- Porosity Test Procedure: Ceramic fragments are immersed in a 3% solution of a red/violet methine dye (e.g., Astrazon or Basonil) under a pressure of at least 15 MPa. The test duration and pressure product must reach a minimum of 180 (hours x MPa). After immersion, the fragments are washed, dried, and broken to assess dye penetration, indicating material porosity.
- Compliance and Implementation Dates: National standard adoption deadline was August 1, 2001, with conflicting standards to be withdrawn by November 1, 2003.
- Multilingual Availability: The standard is available in English, French, and German, with national language translations endorsed by CENELEC.
Applications
SIST EN 60168:1997/A2:2002 is vital for:
- Electrical Utilities: Ensuring the reliability and safety of insulators in power transmission and distribution networks operating above 1 kV.
- Manufacturers: Guiding quality control during production of ceramic and glass post insulators to meet European and international standards.
- Testing Laboratories: Standardizing procedures to test insulator properties such as porosity, mechanical strength, and electrical endurance.
- Engineering and Design: Facilitating correct selection of insulator materials and designs to withstand environmental stresses and electrical loads in substations and overhead lines.
- Regulatory Authorities: Providing clear benchmarks for certification and compliance verification to enhance power system safety.
Related Standards
- IEC 60168:1994: The original international standard upon which this European amendment is based.
- EN 60168:1994: The base European standard for tests on ceramic and glass post insulators.
- Other IEC Standards on Insulators (e.g., IEC TC 36): Covering further specifications and testing methods related to electrical insulators for power systems.
- CENELEC Internal Regulations: Governing the adoption and modification of electrotechnical standards across European member countries.
Summary
Adherence to SIST EN 60168:1997/A2:2002 ensures that ceramic and glass post insulators used in high-voltage systems maintain high durability and electrical performance. This standard provides essential test methods to evaluate insulator quality, with emphasis on porosity testing critical for ceramic materials. By following this harmonized European guideline, stakeholders support power system safety, equipment reliability, and regulatory compliance across Europe.
