Overview
SIST EN 19:2024/oprA1:2026 is a draft amendment to the European Standard EN 19:2023, prepared by CEN/TC 69, focusing on the marking of industrial metallic valves. This standard specifies detailed requirements for how metallic valves used in industry must be marked. It covers the types of markings, their locations-such as directly on the valve body, flanges, or attached identification plates-and the method of applying these markings.
This standard is vital for manufacturers, distributors, and users of industrial metallic valves to ensure traceability, safety, and compliance with applicable legislation, especially the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU). Notably, plastic valves are excluded from this scope.
Key Topics
Mandatory Markings: Every industrial metallic valve must display integral markings or be affixed with a marking plate bearing key information including manufacturer details, pressure and temperature ratings, valve identification codes, and conformity labels aligned with EU regulations.
Supplementary and Other Markings: Additional markings may include information such as supplementary technical details, maintenance instructions, or special designations. Annex B offers illustrative examples of compliant marking plates and combinations.
Advanced Marking Methods: The amendment incorporates the option to use digital and advanced marking technologies based on standards like EN IEC 61406-1:2022 and EN IEC 61406-2:2024. These methods complement traditional markings by providing enhanced product data accessibility, especially useful in automated industrial environments.
Pressure and Temperature Specifications:
- PS: Maximum allowable pressure a valve is designed for.
- TSmax and TSmin: Maximum and minimum allowable temperatures.
These values must be clearly marked following defined conventions that align with related EN standards such as EN 12516-1 and EN 1092 series for flanges.
Compliance and Normative References: The amendment updates references to key European standards covering flanges and pressure ratings, ensuring cohesiveness with the broader valves and piping standards ecosystem.
Applications
The SIST EN 19:2024/oprA1:2026 standard applies primarily to:
- Valve manufacturers who must mark their products to ensure compliance with EU pressure equipment legislation and product-specific standards.
- End-users and operators of industrial valve installations seeking safety assurance and correct valve identification for installation, operation, and maintenance.
- Quality control and inspection bodies requiring standardized markings to verify conformity and facilitate traceability.
- Industrial sectors such as oil & gas, chemical processing, water treatment, and manufacturing where metallic valves are widely deployed.
The introduction of advanced digital marking methods provides significant advantages in process automation, asset management, and digital twin integration, enabling easier access to valve data throughout the lifecycle.
Related Standards
SIST EN 19:2024/oprA1:2026 is used alongside these important standards:
- EN 1092 series - Covers specifications for circular flanges for pipes and valves (steel, cast iron, copper, aluminium alloys).
- EN 12516-1 - Defines pressure/temperature ratings for industrial valves.
- EN IEC 61406-1 & 61406-2 - Standards for advanced digital marking and identification links.
- EN IEC 63365 - Digital nameplate for industrial process measurement and control, supporting data-rich product identification.
- EN 764-1 - Relates to design codes for pressure components, providing background on pressure and temperature relationships.
The standard also aligns with Directive 2014/68/EU (Pressure Equipment Directive), helping manufacturers meet essential safety and regulatory requirements within the European Union.
By adhering to SIST EN 19:2024/oprA1:2026, stakeholders ensure consistent, reliable, and legally compliant marking of industrial metallic valves-facilitating safety, traceability, quality assurance, and the integration of emerging digital technologies in industry.
