Overview
prEN 6128:2024 - "Aerospace series - Blind bolt, 100° flush head, high strength" is a draft CEN/ASD-STAN document that specifies the configuration, dimensions, tolerances, and mass of a stainless steel blind bolt with a 100° flush head intended for aerospace applications. It is submitted for CEN enquiry and, when adopted, will supersede EN 6128:2017. The standard is targeted at high‑strength blind fastening where only one side of the assembly is accessible (blind‑side fastening).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Geometry and configuration: detailed diagrams (Figure 1 and Figure 2) define the bolt, serrated pin geometry, locking collar, sleeve, crown height and optional components (shifting anvil / drive washer).
- Dimensions and tolerances: numeric dimension tables (Table 1) cover diameter codes (05, 06, 08, 10, 12), head and pin sizes, gage diameters and serration details to ensure interchangeability.
- Mechanical requirements: installed static shear and tensile strength, tensile preload and spindle retention values are specified (Table 2) to support structural design and safety verification.
- Grip range and mass: comprehensive grip range tables (Table 3) and mass-per-1 000 pcs (Table 4) for selection, weight budgeting and logistics.
- Material, finish and lubrication: requirements and options referenced in Table 5 and Table 6, with normative references to passivation and lubricant specifications (e.g., SAE AMS2700, MIL and SAE lubricant specs).
- Designation and marking: rules for part designation and marking traceability consistent with aerospace marking practice (see EN 2424 referenced).
- Installation considerations: typical installation geometry and allowable blind-side head slope (notes in Figure 2).
Applications and practical value
- Use for blind-side, high-strength structural joints in aircraft and spacecraft where a 100° flush head is required to maintain aerodynamic or flush surfaces.
- Enables consistent procurement, manufacturing and inspection of stainless‑steel blind bolts across OEMs, suppliers and maintenance organizations.
- Supports design validation by providing installed shear/tensile capacities and preload data for structural analysis.
- Useful for repair, retrofit and assembly processes where one-sided access makes conventional bolting impractical.
Who should use this standard
- Aerospace design and stress engineers specifying fasteners for structural joints
- Fastener manufacturers and quality engineers producing to aerospace tolerances
- Procurement specialists and parts managers creating purchase specifications
- Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations and certification bodies
Related standards (normative references)
- EN 2424 (marking), EN 4473 (fastener coatings)
- SAE AMS2700 (passivation), SAE material and lubricant specifications
- NASM8975, MIL and AS lubricant documents cited for finishes and lubrication
