Automatic electrostatic spraying equipment for flammable coating powder

This European Standard specifies requirements for automatic electrostatic spraying equipment which are used for spraying flammable powders which create explosive atmospheres in the spraying area. In this connection distinction is made between spraying devices which due to their type of construction comply with requirements as laid down in EN 50050:2006 as applicable, and those for which other discharge energies and/or current limits are stipulated. It also gives information on the safe operational conditions of the electrical equipment including ventilation requirements. Additional requirements as to the construction of the spraying areas such as cabins, booths, etc. are dealt with in EN 12981.

Ortsfeste elektrostatische Sprühanlagen für brennbare Beschichtungspulver

1.1   Diese Europäische Norm legt Anforderungen für ortsfeste elektrostatische Sprühanlagen fest, die zum Versprühen von brennbaren Beschichtungspulvern verwendet werden, wobei sich explosionsfähige Atmosphäre im Sprühbereich entwickeln kann. In diesem Zusammenhang wird unterschieden zwischen Sprühvorrichtungen, die auf Grund ihrer Konstruktion den Anforderungen von EN 50050:2006 entsprechen und solchen, für die andere Entladeenergien und/oder Stromstärkebegrenzungen vorgesehen sind. Sie informiert auch über die Anforderungen für den sicheren Betrieb der elektrischen Geräte einschließlich der Anforderungen an die Lüftung. Zusätzliche Anforderungen an die Konstruktion der Sprühbe¬reiche als Kabinen, Stände usw. werden in EN 12981 "Beschichtungsanlagen – Spritzkabinen für organische Pulverlacke – Sicherheitsanforderungen" behandelt. 1.2   Diese Europäische Norm berücksichtigt die drei allgemeinen Klassen von elektrostatischen Sprüh systemen. Typ A   Systeme in Übereinstimmung mit EN 50050:2006 mit einer Entladeenergiebegrenzung auf 2 mJ (siehe 5.1.1). In diesen Systemen besteht die Gefahr eines elektrischen Schlages oder durch Entladungen zündfähiger Energie nicht. Typ B   Systeme mit einer Entladeenergiebegrenzung auf Werte größer als 2 mJ, jedoch kleiner als 350 mJ und einer Stromstärkenbegrenzung auf kleiner als 0,7 mA (siehe 5.1.2). In diesen Systemen besteht die Gefahr eines elektrischen Schlages nicht, wohl aber Gefahren durch Entladungen zündfähiger Energie. Typ C   Systeme mit einer Entladeenergie größer als 350 mJ und/oder einer Stromstärke größer als 0,7 mA (siehe 5.1.3). In diesen Systemen bestehen Gefahren durch elektrischen Schlag und durch zündfähige Energie. 1.3   Diese Europäische Norm behandelt nur diejenigen Gefahren, die für die explosionsfähige Atmosphäre infolge des elektrostatischen Sprühauftrags kennzeichnend sind. 1.4   Ortsfeste elektrostatische Sprühanlagen für brennbare Beschichtungspulver müssen entsprechend den Anforderungen der Gruppe II Kategorie 3, wie sie im EN 60079-0 definiert sind, gebaut sein. 1.5   Diese Europaïsche Norm behandelt nicht Dinge in Zusammenhang mit Lärmentwicklung der Geräte.  Die betreffenden Anforderungen befinden sich in EN ISO 11688-1.

Installations automatiques de projection électrostatique de poudre de revêtement inflammable

1.1   La présente Norme Européenne spécifie les exigences pour les installations de projection électrostatique qui sont utilisées pour projeter des poudres inflammables créant des atmosphères explosives dans l’emplacement de projection. Une distinction est faite entre les systèmes de projection qui du fait de leur construction sont conformes aux exigences applicables de la EN 50050 :2006, et ceux pour lesquels d’autres énergies de décharge et/ou limites de courant sont stipulées. La présente norme donne aussi des informations sur les conditions de sécurité de fonctionnement du matériel électrique en y incluant les exigences de ventilation. Des exigences complémentaires comme pour les emplacements de projection telles que les cabines, les postes de travail, etc. sont traitées dans la EN 12981. 1.2   La présente Norme Européenne considère les trois types de systèmes de projection électrostatiques suivants : Type   A   : Systèmes conformes à la EN 50050:2006 avec une énergie de décharge ne dépassant pas 2 mJ (voir 5.1.1)    Dans ces systèmes, il n’y a pas de risque, ni de choc électrique, ni d’énergie incendiaire. Type   B    : Systèmes avec une énergie de décharge dépassant 2 mJ mais inférieure à 350 mJ et une limite de courant inférieure à 0,7 mA (voir 5.1.2)    Dans ces systèmes, il n’y a pas de risque de choc électrique mais l’énergie de décharge présente un risque incendiaire. Type   C    : Systèmes avec une énergie de décharge dépassant 350 mJ et/ou une limite de courant dépassant 0,7 mA (voir 5.1.3)    Dans ces systèmes, il n’y a des risques de choc électrique et d’énergie de décharge incendiaire. 1.3   La présente Norme Européenne considère uniquement les dangers qui sont spécifiques aux caractéristiques électrostatiques du procédé de projection électrostatique. 1.4   L’installation automatique de projection électrostatique pour la projection de poudres inflammables doit être construit tel qu’un matériel de Groupe II Catégorie 3 comme défini dans la EN 60079-0. 1.5   La présente Norme Européenne ne traite pas du domaine du bruit crée par le matériel. Pour cet aspect, les exigences sont établies dans la EN ISO 11688-1.

This European Standard supersedes EN 50177:1996.

0 Introduction
0.1 Process
In the process of electrostatic powder coating the powder is transported in an air stream from a powder
hopper up to an electrostatic spraying device. As the powder particles flow through the spraying device they
are electrostatically charged by means of a high voltage of the order of some tens of kilovolts and ejected in
the form of a cloud which is directed towards the workpiece. The powder particles of the cloud are attracted
to and deposited on the earthed workpiece. The powder will continue to be deposited on the earthed
workpiece until, at a certain thickness, it acts as an insulator and so further deposition of powder is
prevented.
Powder that is not deposited on the workpiece (overspray) is extracted by the exhaust ventilation system or
other means into the powder collection unit.
The workpieces coated with powder are then passed into an oven where the powder is melted and cured into
a coherent coating.
0.2 Special hazard

A flammable coating powder explosion may occur where both
– the concentration of coating powder in air is in the explosion range and
– a source of ignition of sufficient energy for that coating powder cloud is present. This ignition source can
be for example a hot surface, a naked flame or an electrical arc or spark.
It follows that an explosion can be prevented if one or preferably both of these conditions are avoided. Due to
the difficulty in totally eliminating sources of ignition most reliance should be placed on avoiding explosive
concentrations of coating powder in air.
Although an intimate mixture of flammable coating powder and air may burn with explosive violence,

not all mixtures will do so. There is a range of concentrations of coating powder in air in which the mixture
can explode, but mixtures above or below this range cannot.
NOTE If a burning powder cloud is confined within a space which restricts free escape of expanding gases and combustion products
the explosion may lead to a pressure increase.
The particle size distribution of coating powders is usually in the range of 5 µm to 80 µm. Where there

is a doubt about or no knowledge of the lower explosion limit, an average concentration of the coating powder
suspended in the air of 10 g/m³ shall not be exceeded.
0.2.3 It is important that deposits of powder are not allowed to accumulate within the spraying areas for they
may become disturbed and give rise to an explosive atmosphere. This does not apply to deposits on filter
devices and accumulations of coating powder in hoppers where filters and hoppers are integrated in the
spraying area and are designed to collect the coating powder.
0.2.4 Careful attention should be given to prevent the build-up of an electrostatic charge on various surfaces
close to the powder application zone. These can be the workpieces being coated or moving automatic
devices and fixtures of the powder spraying system etc. Care should be taken that these are adequately
earthed. Of special importance is the attention needed to maintain proper earthing through the fixtures
supporting the workpieces. These should be carefully designed to minimize deposition of powder on them.

1 Scope
1.1 This European Standard specifies requirements for automatic electrostatic spraying equipment which
are used for spraying flammable powders which create explosive atmospheres in the spraying area. In this
connection distinction is made between spraying devices which due to their type of construction comply with

It also gives information on the safe operational conditions of the electrical equipment including ventilation
requirements. Additional requirements as to the construction of the spraying areas such as cabins, booths,
etc. are dealt with in EN 12981.
1.2 This European Standard considers the following three types of electrostatic spraying systems.
Type A Systems complying with EN 50050:2006 with a discharge energy limit of 2 mJ (see 5.1.1)

In these systems there is no danger of either electric shock or discharges of incendive energy.
Type B Systems with a discharge energy in excess of 2 mJ but less than 350 mJ and a current limit of less
than 0,7 mA (see 5.1.2)

In these systems there is no danger of electric shock but there are dangers from discharges of
incendive energy.
Type C Systems with a discharge energy in excess of 350 mJ and/or a current in excess of 0,7 mA (see 5.1.3)

In these systems there are dangers of electric shock and from discharges of incendive energy.
1.3 This European Standard considers the hazards specific to explosive atmospheres created by the
electrostatic spraying process.
1.4 The automatic electrostatic spraying equipment for flammable coating powders shall be constructed
suitable for group II category 3 as defined in EN 60079-0.
This European Standard does not deal with matters of noise created by the equipment. For this item,

the requirements are laid down in EN ISO 11688-1.

3 Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

electrostatic spraying device for powder spraying material
device for producing, charging and depositing suspended powder particles with the assistance of electric fields

electrostatic spraying system
system in general comprising electrostatic spraying devices, high voltage supply system and connecting cables

automatic electrostatic spraying equipment
equipment in which the spraying device is either permanently fixed or led by means of moving automatic
devices (e.g. robots)
NOTE An installation with automatic electrostatic spraying equipment comprises in general the following items:

antistatic gloves
gloves that have a resistance low enough to prevent the build-up of electrostatic charges capable of an
incendive discharge
3.15
antistatic floor
floor which has a resistance to earth which is low enough to prevent the build-up of electrostatic charges
capable of an incendive discharge

minimum volumetric flow
air flow of the exhaust ventilation system which is to be ensured in accordance with 5.2.1

explosion relief venting
protection measures at which an area of the panelwork of the enclosure (for example of the powder collection
unit) is designed and constructed to release the excess pressure in the event of an explosion to prevent injury
to persons and further damage to equipment

explosion suppression
system which can detect, usually by a sensitive pressure sensor or a flame detector, an explosion in its
incipient growth stage and automatically inject a suppressant like water or an ammonium phosphate powder
to quench the explosion before it can develop

explosion decoupling
system preventing the propagation of flames and explosions from one apparatus to other parts of the
installation by special devices, e.g. mechanical high-speed shut-off, rotary valve, or flame suppression
barriers

4 General requirements
4.1 All equipment and components shall be designed and constructed according to good engineering
practice and in conformity with the requirements for category 3 group II equipment as defined in EN 60079-0
to ensure avoidance of any ignition source. Requirements given in Clause 1 of EN 60079-0:2006 result from
an ignition hazard assessment which defines the category of electrical equipment.
Spraying of flammable coating powder shall be performed only in spraying areas which are equipped in

accordance with Clause 5.
An exhaust ventilation system shall be provided to avoid the escape of powder in the surrounding area
