Overview
EN 60335-2-73:2003/A1:2006 is Amendment A1 to the European safety standard for fixed immersion heaters used in household and similar applications. Approved by CENELEC in March 2006, this amendment aligns the European text with IEC 60335-2-73:2002/A1:2006 and updates the base standard to clarify safety requirements, marking and instructions, and abnormal-operation testing.
This document is relevant to manufacturers, test laboratories, product safety engineers and compliance teams working with water heating equipment and domestic heating products.
Key Topics
Introduction and scope adjustments
- The amendment revises the introduction to explicitly address abnormal situations expected in practice and the influence of electromagnetic phenomena on safe operation.
- The scope is updated to add the phrase "open to the atmosphere" after "water tank" in the second paragraph, refining the intended application of requirements.
Classification and national alignment
- Clause 6.2 deletes a previously added national addition; the amendment removes national divergences by endorsing the IEC text.
- The amendment was to be implemented nationally by 2006-12-01, with conflicting national standards withdrawn by 2009-03-01.
Marking and instructions
- Clause 7.12.1 adds a requirement that, where applicable, the product instructions must state the immersion heater is to be installed only in systems where the heating element is always below water level (for example, cistern-fed tanks).
Abnormal-operation testing
- Clause 19.2 clarifies that the abnormal-operation test is not required for immersion heaters intended for installation in systems where the heating element remains continuously submerged (e.g., cistern-fed tanks).
Applications
This amendment improves clarity and practical application of the safety standard for:
- Manufacturers of fixed immersion heaters for domestic and similar water heating systems
- Product design teams ensuring compliance with marking and installation instructions
- Test labs validating safety performance under normal and defined abnormal conditions
- Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies harmonising national standards with IEC/CENELEC text
Practical benefits include reduced ambiguity in installation instructions, clearer test applicability for devices always submerged, and harmonised requirements across CENELEC members.
