This part of IEC 62231 is applicable to composite station post insulators for substations with
a.c. voltages greater than 1 000 V up to 245 kV.
It also applies to composite station post insulators of similar design used in power stations of
railway systems.
This part of IEC 62231 specifies main dimensions and values for mechanical and electrical
characteristics of composite station post insulators.
NOTE The composite station post insulators covered by this standard are primarily intended for outdoor service,
but can also be used indoor.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising

1 Scope
This part of IEC 62231 is applicable to composite station post insulators for substations with
a.c. voltages greater than 1 000 V up to 245 kV.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

composite station post insulator
post insulator consisting of a solid load bearing cylindrical insulating core, a housing and end
fittings attached to the insulating core

creepage distance
shortest distance or the sum of the shortest distances along the surface on an insulator
between two conductive parts which normally have the operating voltage between them

Note 1 to entry: The surface of cement or of any other non-insulating jointing material is not considered as
forming part of the creepage distance.
Note 2 to entry: If a high resistance coating is applied to parts of the insulating part of an insulator, such parts are
considered to be effective insulating surfaces and the distance over them is included in the creepage distance.
