Tests for thermal and weathering properties of aggregates - Part 6: Determination of resistance to freezing and thawing in the presence of salt (NaCl)
Tests for thermal and weathering properties of aggregates - Part 6: Determination of resistance to freezing and thawing in the presence of salt (NaCl)
This European Standard specifies a method of assessing the frost resistance of an aggregate when it is subjected to the cyclic action of freezing and thawing in the presence of 1 % solution of NaCl in de-ionized or distilled water.
The results of this test provide a means for assessing an aggregate’s resistance to this form of weathering in areas where frequent freeze-thaw cycling occurs with seawater sprays or abundant de-icers conditions, and where result values of EN 1367-1 test method do not describe correctly aggregate performance in extreme conditions.
This European Standard gives the option to control the thawing sequence either by immersion in water or by using air circulation in the low temperature cabinet to obtain the required reference temperature.
This test method is applicable to coarse aggregates or to coarse aggregates' fractions of all-in materials. This method is not appropriate for lightweight aggregates covered by EN 13055 or aggregates which can not be submitted to 110 °C oven drying.

Overview
EN 1367-6:2008 - Tests for thermal and weathering properties of aggregates, Part 6 - specifies a laboratory freeze–thaw with salt (NaCl) test to assess the frost resistance of coarse aggregates when exposed to cyclic freezing and thawing in a 1 % NaCl solution. The method is intended for environments with seawater spray or extensive use of de‑icers where standard freeze–thaw tests (EN 1367‑1) may not adequately reflect performance under saline conditions.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to coarse aggregates or coarse fractions of all‑in materials (preferred fraction 8–16 mm; alternatively 4–8 mm). Not suitable for lightweight aggregates covered by EN 13055 or aggregates that cannot be oven‑dried at 110 °C.
- Salt solution: Test uses a 1 % NaCl solution (20.0 g NaCl in 1 980 g de‑ionized or distilled water to make 2 000 g).
- Specimen preparation:
- Wash, dry to constant mass at (110 ± 5) °C and weigh (M1).
- Three individual specimens per aggregate source; typical masses: 2 000 g (8–16 mm) or 1 000 g (4–8 mm).
- Freeze–thaw cycle:
- Soak specimens 24 ± 1 h in 1 % NaCl, covered by at least 10 mm solution.
- Subject specimens to 10 freeze–thaw cycles: cool to approximately −17.5 °C under solution and thaw to 20 °C. Thawing may be controlled by immersion in water or by air circulation in the low‑temperature cabinet.
- Maintain specified time/temperature profile and temperature control at the reference measuring point.
- Result measurement:
- After cycles, sieve the specimen through a sieve with aperture d/2 (half the lower size limit).
- Dry residue to constant mass and weigh (M2).
- Mass loss (F) = 100 × (M1 − M2) / M1 (%). Report individual F values and the mean FNaCl.
- Apparatus: ventilated drying oven, low‑temperature cabinet with air circulation, corrosion‑resistant cans, balances, sieves.
Applications
- Assess aggregate durability for:
- Coastal and marine infrastructure subject to seawater spray
- Road and pavement materials exposed to frequent de‑icing salts
- Projects where EN 1367‑1 results underestimate salt-related deterioration
- Helps specifiers, materials laboratories and aggregate producers determine whether an aggregate is suitable for use in freeze–thaw and saline exposure conditions.
Who uses this standard
- Aggregate testing laboratories, quality control teams, civil engineers, pavement designers, highway authorities, port and coastal infrastructure planners, and specification writers.
