This International Standard specifies methods of test for characterizing binders, i.e. aqueous dispersions and solutions of polymers and copolymers, in particular those used as raw materials for water-based coating materials. The properties determined will depend on whether a drying or curing system is tested.

Diese Internationale Norm legt Prüfverfahren zur Charakterisierung von wasserverdünnbaren Bindemitteln, d. h. wässrige Dispersionen und Lösungen von Polymeren und Copolymeren, fest, insbesondere, wenn diese als Rohstoffe für wasserverdünnbare Beschichtungsstoffe verwendet werden. Welche Eigenschaften zu bestimmen sind, hängt davon ab, ob ein physikalisch trocknendes oder ein chemisch härtendes System geprüft werden soll.

L'ISO 7143:2007 spécifie des méthodes d'essai permettant de caractériser les liants, c'est-à-dire les dispersions aqueuses et les solutions de polymères et de copolymères, en particulier ceux utilisés comme matières premières pour les produits de peinture en phase aqueuse. Les propriétés déterminées seront différentes selon que l'on procède à l'essai d'un système à séchage air ou à séchage four.

Foreword
This document (EN ISO 7143:2007) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35
"Paints and varnishes" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 139 "Paints and
varnishes", the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of
an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by August 2007, and conflicting national
standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by August 2007.
This document supersedes EN ISO 7143:2004.
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of
the following countries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium,
Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway,

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
