Aerospace series - Cables, electrical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 604: Resistance to dry arc propagation
This European standard specifies a method for appraising the behaviour of cable insulation when an electric arc is initiated and maintained by two powered cables rubbing against a blade.
This European Standard shall be used together with EN 3475 100.
The primary aim of this test is:
— to produce, in a controlled fashion, continuous failure effects which are representative of those which may occur in service when a typical cable bundle is damaged by abrasion such that electrical arcing occurs, both between cables and between cables and conductive structure, and
— to examine the aptitude of the insulation to track, to propagate electric arc to the electrical origin.
Originally defined for 115 Vac network, this test also proposes conditions for 230 Vac network. Unless otherwise specified in product standard, only 115 Vac conditions shall be satisfied.
Six levels of prospective fault current have been specified for concerned cable sizes (see Clause 7). It is generally agreed that larger sizes need not be assessed since the short-circuit phenomenon becomes dominant at low line impedances.
Unless otherwise specified in the technical/product standard sizes 002, 006 and 020 cable shall be assessed.

Overview - EN 3475-604:2018 (Resistance to dry arc propagation)
EN 3475-604:2018 is a CEN aerospace test method that evaluates the behaviour of electrical cable insulation when an electrical arc is initiated and maintained by two powered cables abrading against an aluminium blade. Intended primarily for aircraft cable qualification, the standard reproduces service‑representative arc‑failure conditions (arc‑tracking and propagation to the electrical origin) under controlled laboratory conditions. The procedure is used together with EN 3475-100 (general test methods).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test objective: Assess insulation aptitude to track and to propagate an electric arc between cables and/or to conductive structure.
- Network voltages: Originally defined for 115 Vac (400 Hz); test conditions for 230 Vac (400 Hz) are also given but, unless otherwise specified, 115 Vac is the default.
- Specimen configuration: Seven 0.5 m cable lengths laid up in a six‑around‑one bundle; cables in contact with the blade are identified (A1, B1).
- Mechanical abrasion: Oscillating aluminium blade (material T6061‑T6) with a minimum 15 mm stroke at (8 ± 2) Hz and a downward force of (2.5 ± 0.1) N. Blade is earthed to generator neutral.
- Electrical conditions: Six levels of prospective fault current are specified for relevant cable sizes. Typical cable sizes to be assessed include 002, 006 and 020 unless otherwise defined in product standards.
- Sampling and reproducibility: For each fault current level, three samples are tested (18 samples per cable size for six current levels).
- Safety and instrumentation: Tests are destructive and hazardous - video recording, transparent enclosure, automatic blade removal and power‑down on open circuit, and appropriate generator/breaker arrangements are required.
- Post‑test checks: Visual damage recording (char length, tracking path). For 115 Vac, if tracking is evident, a voltage proof (immersion) test per EN 3475‑302 may be applied to affected cores.
Applications - who uses this standard
- Aerospace OEMs and tier‑1 suppliers for cable qualification and design verification.
- Cable manufacturers to demonstrate insulation resistance to arc‑tracking and propagation.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing acceptance testing for aircraft electrical harnesses.
- Design and safety engineers assessing mitigation measures (insulation materials, routing, circuit protection) and compliance with aircraft product specifications.
Practical value and outcomes
- Confirms whether insulation formulations and cable constructions resist arc initiation, tracking and propagation under realistic abrasion‑induced fault conditions.
- Informs cable selection, harness design, circuit‑breaker ratings and protective strategies to reduce in‑service arcing risk.
- Provides repeatable, standardized evidence for certification dossiers and product specifications.
