Electrical apparatus for potentially explosive atmospheres - Electrostatic hand-held spraying equipment

This European Standard specifies the constructional and test requirements for hand-held and handoperated electrostatic spraying equipment and associated apparatus which can be used to spray flammable liquid coating materials, flammable coating powders or flammable flock creating explosive atmosphere in spraying areas which may or may not contain flammable adhesives. This standard only deals with the hazards involved in the coating process when hand-held electrostatic spraying equipment is used as prescribed and in accordance with the conditions which are to be expected according to the manufacturer. As to other hazards involved in the use of hand-held spraying equipment, the safety requirements of EN 1953:1998 shall be met. The spraying equipment shall be constructed suitable for group II category 2 as defined in EN 60079-0.

Introduction
When materials are sprayed with hand-held electrostatic spraying equipment, the material is converted into a
cloud of droplets or particles directed to a surface to produce there a uniform layer of the required thickness
and quality. The particles are charged by high voltage of tens of kilovolts or triboelectrically so that they are
attracted by the earthed workpiece and deposited on it.

4 Constructional requirements
4.1 General requirements for all types of spray guns
All equipment and components shall be designed and constructed according to good engineering practice
and in conformity with the requirements for category 2 group II equipment as defined in EN 60079-0 to
ensure avoidance of any ignition source. Requirements given in Clause 1 of EN 60079-0:2006 result from an
ignition hazard assessment which defines the category of electrical equipment.
4.1.1 In view of other hazards which are important without being treated in this standard, the equipment
shall in addition be constructed in accordance with the principles of EN ISO 12100 and the safety
requirements of EN 1953.
As category 2 equipment according to EN 60079-0, running under atmospheric conditions (0 °C to + 40 °C
and 0,8 bar to 1,1 bar), hand-held spraying equipment meeting these requirements is suitable for use in
spraying areas.
4.1.2 The handle of the spray gun shall have a contact surface area of conductive material of at least
20 cm². This surface of metal or other conductive material shall be connected to the earth terminal (see
4.1.5). The resistance of this surface to earth shall not exceed 1 MΩ.
4.1.3 All cables shall be permanently attached to the spray gun (see 5.1.6). For flock spray guns it is
sufficient that all cables are attached securely.
4.1.4 Any cable to the gun, other than those carrying only earthed intrinsically safe circuits, shall include an
earthed metallic screen protected by an insulated sheath. This does not apply to guns with high voltage
generator inside the gun if there are two independent cables for the earth line on two separated contacts and
if the insulation of the cables is high enough to withstand spraying with the gun directly on the cable. No
voltage peaks on the high voltage generator may occur during this process.
4.1.5 All conductive parts of the spray gun other than those designed to acquire a high potential shall be
assembled so that they remain in electrical contact with each other. These metal parts shall be connected to
the earth terminal in the power supply or control unit of the high-voltage generator by means of terminals of
the type described in Subclause 3.1 or Subclause 3.2 of EN 60079-7:200X or other connections which are
equally reliable.
NOTE  A method of connection between the metal parts of the spray gun and the earth terminal of the power supply unit for the high-
voltage generator is via the metallic screen referred to in 4.1.4.
4.1.6 If it is considered possible that a breakdown could occur within cavities where there could be an
explosive atmosphere, the gun shall pass a high-voltage test of 1,2 U (see 5.1.2). This test is not
max
necessary if the high-voltage electrical components, including their enclosures, comply with the requirements
of an appropriate type of protection in EN 60079 for Group II A (e.g. flameproof enclosure "d" according to
EN 60079-1).

---------------------- Page: 9 ----------------------

– 9 – EN 50050:2006
4.1.7 The high-voltage cable shall be capable of withstanding a voltage test of 1,2 U (see 5.1.2).
max
4.1.8 The operating trigger of the spray gun shall be biased towards the OFF position. The trigger, when
released, shall switch off the high-voltage supply and the spraying material supply to the spray gun within 2 s.
Multi-outlet high-voltage supplies shall not be used unless isolation for each high-voltage outlet can be
achieved by release of the operating trigger of the spray gun connected to the outlet concerned.
4.1.9 Any current limiting resistor used in the spray gun or the associated equipment shall be so mounted,
insulated and protected that it is immune from short circuit and shall be so rated that it is undamaged when a
short circuit occurs between the high-voltage electrode of the spray gun and earth for 5 min.
4.1.10 Components on which safety in respect of ignition depends and which are built into the high-voltage
supply shall be connected, assembled, etc., so that the safety of the device cannot be prejudiced.
4.1.11 If Zener diodes are used to limit the high voltage, they shall be duplicated. Zener diodes shall not be
operated at more than 2/3 of their manufacturer's rating under a one fault condition (see Subclauses 3.2, 5.1
and 6.6 of EN 60079-11:200X).
4.1.12 Adjusting devices, which could increase the maximum tested high voltage, shall be durably and
permanently locked. This requirement is also applicable to other safety-related parameters, such as current
threshold value and maximum current.
4.1.13 High-voltage supplies equipped with an electronic control unit for high voltage or current reduction
shall meet the requirements of the ignition test according to 5.2 even in the event of frequently occurring
disturbances or equipment faults of the control unit, which normally have to be taken into account.
4.2 Requirements only for spray guns for flammable liquid coating materials
4.2.1 Any electrical equipment or part of electrical equipment of a paint spray gun including the outer
enclosure of the gun, with the exception of the components in the high voltage circuit, shall comply with the
requirements of one or more of the types of protection listed in EN 60079.
For spray guns in the case of whic
