Advanced technical ceramics - Methods of test for ceramic powders - Part 11: Determination of densification on natural sintering

This Part of EN 725 describes a method for determining the densification of ceramic powders on natural sintering, without the application of any external pressure. The method is applicable to pure oxides, mixtures of oxides and solid solutions. Inorganic sintering additives may be used where their presence is reported.

Der vorliegende Teil von EN 725 legt ein Verfahren fest zur Bestimmung des Verdichtungsverhaltens von
keramischen Pulvern bei natürlichem Sinterbrand ohne die Anwendung eines zusätzlichen äußeren Druckes.
Das Verfahren ist anwendbar auf reine Oxide, Oxidgemische und feste Lösungen. Anorganische Sinterzusatzstoffe
können zum Einsatz kommen, wenn auf deren Vorhandensein im Prüfbericht hingewiesen wird.

Foreword
This document (EN 725-11:2006) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 184 “Advanced
technical ceramics”, the secretariat of which is held by BSI.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by December 2006, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn
at the latest by December 2006.
This document supersedes ENV 725-11:1993.
EN 725 Advanced technical ceramics — Methods of test for ceramic powders was prepared in Parts as
follows:

This part of EN 623 specifies qualitative methods for determination of the presence of defects in advanced technical ceramics by dye penetration tests. The results are reported as visual observations of dye penetration.
Three methods are described:
Method A:  A fuchsine dye test which is suitable for white or pale-coloured ceramic products, performed using an evacuation test.
Method B:  A fluorescent dye test which is suitable particularly for those products where the purple fuchsine has insufficient visual contrast with the ceramic material, performed using a proprietary test kit.
Method C:  A fuchsine dye test which is performed by simple immersion in or spraying with a dye solution, suitable for routine testing for major defects.

ISO 15732:2003 is for material development, material comparison, quality assurance, characterization, reliability and design data generation.
Fracture toughness values determined with other test methods cannot be interchanged with KIpb as defined in this International Standard, and may not be interchangeable with each other.

This document specifies two methods for the determination of specific heat capacity of advanced monolithic technical ceramic materials based on drop calorimetry (Method A) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC, Method B) over a temperature range from room temperature upwards, depending on the design of the equipment.
NOTE 1   The methods described apply in the case of test materials free from phase transformations, annealing effects or partial melting. If any such effect occurs in a material over the temperature range of the test, spurious results will be obtained unless the data are carefully analysed. In such cases it is usually necessary to conduct repeat tests at a number of temperatures close to the discontinuity, in order to estimate correctly its contribution to the apparent heat capacity.
NOTE 2   Care should be exercised in both methods over the selection of the cell or crucible material and in the selection of the test atmosphere, especially at high temperatures. Test pieces can react with the crucible or the atmosphere, leading to spurious results. In general, an awareness of such problems should be maintained at all times. Especially with regard to Method B, awareness should also be maintained of radiation effects at temperatures above 1000 °C, and of the reproducibility of the output signal.

This part of EN 623 concerns the use of conventional stylus type instruments for the measurement of surface texture of advanced monolithic technical ceramics, sets the test machine measuring parameters, and recommends the adoption of certain precautions and conditions of measurement.
NOTE   Non-contact optical methods of surface texture measurement employ a different concept using a narrow laser beam. The interaction of the beam with the surface is influenced by the angle of the surface to the beam and the reflectivity/translucence of the surface. The reflected beam is detected in a number of ways based on spot focus or beam deflection and converted into a height profile. Results from such a test are not directly equivalent to those obtained by the stylus method.
