Tips for assistive products for walking - Requirements and test methods - Part 1: Friction of tips (ISO 24415-1:2009)

ISO 24415-1:2009 specifies requirements and test methods for the friction between the tips for assistive products for walking and the walking surface. The requirements and test method are based on a usage of tips for ordinary gait on the dry and flat walking surface.
ISO 24415-1:2009 is not applicable to tips manufactured for special purposes.

In dem vorliegenden Teil der ISO 24415 werden die Anforderungen an und die Prüfverfahren für die Reibung
zwischen dem Puffer für technische Gehhilfen und der Laufoberfläche festgelegt. Dieser Teil der ISO 24415
gilt nicht für Puffer, die für spezielle Anwendungen hergestellt werden. Die Anforderungen und das Prüfverfahren
beruhen auf der Anwendung von Puffern, die für den üblichen Gang auf einer trockenen, ebenen
Laufoberfläche verwendet werden.
BEISPIEL 1 Beispiele für technische Gehhilfen sind Gehstöcke, Ellenbogenkrücken, Unterarmkrücken, Achselkrücken,
Laufgestelle, Rollatoren und Laufstühle.
BEISPIEL 2 Ein Beispiel für spezielle Anwendungen ist eine Anwendung bei Eis und/oder Schnee.

EN ISO 24415-1:2009 specifies requirements and test methods for the friction between tips used on assistive products for walking (canes, crutches, walking frames, rollators, walking tables). The standard covers frictional performance on a dry, flat walking surface for ordinary gait and is not applicable to tips manufactured for special purposes (for example, ice/snow). It has been adopted by CEN and is intended to help ensure consistent, safe traction of tips in everyday use.

• Sample preparation: Tips washed with neutral detergent, conditioned at test environment for ≥3 hours; three test samples per model.
• Measurement and recording: Frictional force recorded as waveforms (accuracy ±2 %), five recorded runs after three conditioning runs; the average of five values is calculated and the lowest average from the three samples is the final result.
• Apparatus elements: test track (float glass), loading mechanism, pulling mechanism, load cell/data recorder, rigid frame (examples and diagrams provided in annexes).
• Test report: Must include product identification, dimensions (outer/inner diameters), photographs, measurement system accuracy and sampling, test date and compliance outcome.

Friction between the tips and the walking surface is an extraordinarily important factor by which a user can confirm his/her motion. The tips are used on many different assistive products for walking, including canes, walking sticks, crutches, walking frames, rollators and walking tables and are produced in many different sizes and made of many different materials depending on the assistive products for walking to which they are applied. Tips with a variety of bottom shapes for a particular kind of assistive product for walking are also available on the market.
