Overview - EN ISO 24415-1:2009 (Tips for assistive products for walking - Friction of tips)

EN ISO 24415-1:2009 specifies requirements and test methods for the friction between tips used on assistive products for walking (canes, crutches, walking frames, rollators, walking tables). The standard covers frictional performance on a dry, flat walking surface for ordinary gait and is not applicable to tips manufactured for special purposes (for example, ice/snow). It has been adopted by CEN and is intended to help ensure consistent, safe traction of tips in everyday use.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Minimum friction requirement: The measured frictional force shall be not less than 25 N when tested per this standard.
  • Test conditions: Tests are performed on the air side of float glass (test track) at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 10) % RH.
  • Loading geometry: Tip is mounted at an angle of (70 ± 2)° and subjected to an axial loading force of (50 ± 1) N along the loading shaft.
  • Test velocity: Relative motion between tip and track at (500 ± 25) mm/min, reached within 0.3 s.
  • Sample preparation: Tips washed with neutral detergent, conditioned at test environment for ≥3 hours; three test samples per model.
  • Measurement and recording: Frictional force recorded as waveforms (accuracy ±2 %), five recorded runs after three conditioning runs; the average of five values is calculated and the lowest average from the three samples is the final result.
  • Apparatus elements: test track (float glass), loading mechanism, pulling mechanism, load cell/data recorder, rigid frame (examples and diagrams provided in annexes).
  • Test report: Must include product identification, dimensions (outer/inner diameters), photographs, measurement system accuracy and sampling, test date and compliance outcome.

Applications - who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers of tips and assistive walking devices - to design and validate tip traction.
  • Test laboratories and QA teams - to perform standardized friction testing and produce compliant test reports.

The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2. The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote. Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. ISO 24415-1:2009(E) iv © ISO 2009 – All rights reserved Introduction A frictional performance of the tips attached to the bottom of assistive products for walking is a key concern ensuring user safety. Friction between the tips and the walking surface is an extraordinarily important factor by which a user can confirm his/her motion. The tips are used on many different assistive products for walking, including canes, walking sticks, crutches, walking frames, rollators and walking tables and are produced in many different sizes and made of many different materials depending on the assistive products for walking to which they are applied. Tips with a variety of bottom shapes for a particular kind of assistive product for walking are also available on the market. In the friction test method found in this part of ISO 24415, tips of original shape are used. In real situations, not only pure frictional characteristics but also the shape and pattern of the bottom surface against the walking surface can affec

The SIST EN ISO 24415-1:2009 standard provides crucial specifications and test methods that focus on the friction characteristics of tips used in assistive products for walking. The primary objective of this standard is to ensure that these tips adequately perform during ordinary gait activities on dry, flat walking surfaces. This emphasis on everyday conditions significantly enhances the practical relevance of the standard, making it an essential reference for manufacturers and users alike. One of the notable strengths of ISO 24415-1:2009 lies in its clear delineation of requirements, which helps manufacturers understand the necessary performance criteria their products must meet to provide safe and effective assistance during ambulation. The standard's rigorous testing methods for evaluating friction contribute to higher safety standards for users, reducing the risk of slips and falls. Additionally, while the standard focuses on tips for walking assistive devices under typical conditions, it does not extend its applicability to tips designed for special purposes. This specificity allows for a targeted approach in product development, ensuring that products are designed with the correct performance expectations in mind. Moreover, the standard supports the ongoing development of innovative assistive technologies by establishing a necessary benchmark for products in the industry. By adhering to ISO 24415-1:2009, manufacturers can enhance product reliability and user confidence, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of friction performance relative to walking safety. In summary, SIST EN ISO 24415-1:2009 stands as a pivotal document that encapsulates essential requirements and test methods for the friction of tips used in assistive products for walking, reinforcing its significance in ensuring user safety and comfort in everyday walking scenarios.
